The Different Articles


0 There are three types of articles in English: 0 Definite Articles (the) 0 Indefinite Articles (a / an) 0 Zero Articles (no article ) 0 The proper use of articles is difficult to master,

especially when you get into advanced use of English. 0 Often you have to work it out by what sounds right but this can be frustrating.

Indefinite Articles
0 Indefinite Articles refer to something not known by

the person you are communicating with. 0 It is also used before nouns to introduce something or someone which was not mentioned before.
0 Example: 0 I saw a monkey this morning at the zoo. It was eating a banana.

0 Indefinite Articles are used to talk about your job. 0 Example:


0 Im an English teacher OR I am a builder.

Definite Articles
0 Definite Articles are used when the speaker and

listener knows or can figure out what you are talking about.
0 Example: 0 I saw a monkey at the zoo today. The monkey ate a banana but the banana was rotten!

0 The definite article is usually used after the particular

object or noun has been introduced. 0 Whats the difference with the examples below?
0 The books are expensive! 0 Books are expensive!

Zero Article (No Article)


0 We usually use no article to talk about things in general: 0 Inflation is rising. 0 People are worried about crime. 0 We do not use an article when talking about sports: 0 My son plays football. 0 Tennis is difficult to pick up. 0 Articles are generally not used with uncountable nouns: 0 Information is important to any organisation. 0 Coffee is bad for you. 0 Countries do not use an article except where they indicate

multiple areas or contain the words (state, kingdom, republic, union): The Netherlands, the UK, the USA, the Republic of Korea.

0 There are many exceptions to the rules above and you

need to learn from practice how best to use articles. 0 Do you know when to use a and an? 0 Usually you use a with consonants and an with vowels. 0 But do you say:
