INTRODUCTION OF THE STUDY

Employee Engagement Definition


Employee engagement definitions vary from a positive emotional connection to an employees work to engaged employees are inspired to go above and beyond the call of duty to help meet business goals Dr Philippa Reed Employee Engagement is the level of commitment an employee has towards the organization. The primary behaviors of engaged employees are speaking positively about the

organization to co-workers, potential employees and customers, having a strong


desire to be a member of the organization, and exerting extra effort to contribute to the organizations success.

COMPANY PROFILE
This central workshop was set up in 1897 by South Indian Railways at Nagapattinam mainly to cater to the requirement of steam locomotive maintenance.

South Indian Railways decided to shift the workshop to Tiruchchirappalli, owing to its location advantage.
It was shifted to Tiruchchirappalli in 1928 because of its strategic location.

At present 6091 employees are working and are primarily engaged in the activities of
DSL Loco maintenance, heritage steam locomotive maintenance, coaching maintenance and wagon manufacturing.

FUNCTIONAL AREAS
The functional areas of the organization are,

HUMAN RESOURCES, FINANCE, PRODUCTION.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY


This research focuses on employee engagement towards an organization excellence.

Highly engaged employees make a substantive contribution to their agency and


may predict organizational success. Disengaged employees can be a serious liability. Employee retention, and productivity are all at risk unless burnout and disengagement can be controlled. This research will address issues in greater detail as well as provides a view on employee engagement for the organization in order for them to know that there employees are engaged or not .

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

In government organization workers are engaged with routine or monotonous


work and because of which the positive emotional connection of an employee towards his work are to go above and beyond the call of duty to help meet business goals is less. It focuses on how to bring employees engaged for excellence in the organization.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
The following are the objectives of the research conducted on Golden Rock Railway Workshop, Trichy. To study the personal profiles of the employees this may influence employee engagement. To analyze the career opportunities provided by the organization to the employees. To measure the effectiveness of training programme. To study the performance appraisal system practiced in the organization. To analyze the level of motivation.

To identify the inter relationship between the dimensions of employee engagement.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research design The research falls into category of descriptive type, which includes data collection and analysis. Population: The population of the study is 6091,at GOLDEN ROCK RAILWAY

WORKSHOP, TIRUCHIRAPPALLI
Sample Size: The sample size of the study is 120. Sample Technique: Sampling Technique that is used in this study is Simple Random Sampling.

TOOLS FOR DATA COLLECTION:

PRIMARY SOURCES: The Primary data was collected with the help of a structured questionnaire.

SECONDARY SOURCES: The secondary data related to industry profile, company profile were taken from company pamphlets, company websites and text books. The secondary data related to review of literature was collected from the online Journal, etc.

TOOLS USED FOR ANALYSIS:

The tools used for the study are: PERCENTAGE ANALYSIS, CHI-SQUARE, CORRELATION.

FINDINGS:( PERCENTAGE ANALYSIS)


From the analysis there were 83% of the employees were having the work experience, of above 4 years in an organization. Only 42% of the employees working in the organization were considered by the management about their career path. 50% of the employees, were identified that the training program given by the organization. The Performance appraisal system followed in the organization is quite moderate(54%). Only 56% of the employees were motivated. 53% of the employees in the organization had good relationship between the superior and subordinates in the organization.

Chi-Square Analysis: The Comparison made between the personal Profile and the overall level of Employee Engagement shows that,
Age and Overall level of employee engagement ,(0.034) is significant. Gender and Overall level of employee engagement,(0.917) is not Significant.

STASTICAL ANALYSIS

Martial status and Overall level of employee engagement,(0.268) is not Significant Work Experience and Overall level of employee engagement,(0.297) is not Significant. Educational Qualification and Overall level of employee engagement (0.80) is not Significant. Income and Overall level of employee engagement (0.941) is not Significant. Since the significant level shows that 0.05 less ,then it is Significant ,and if more Than 0.05 is not Significant.

CORRELATION: This Result shows that the Comparison between the two variables.

The Correlation made between the Career development and Overall employee Engagement is high(.791) The Correlation made between the Training and Overall employee Engagement is high(.761). The Correlation made between the Performance Appraisal and Overall employee Engagement is high(.761). The correlation made between the Job details and Overall employee engagement Is high(.703)

SUGGESTIONS:
From this analysis it is concluded that ,
The organization must take effective consideration towards the employees about their career path. The training program given by the organization must be improved and evaluated periodically to get work excellence. The Performance appraisal system followed in the organization must be given importance in order improve the knowledge of the individual . Since the individual motivation is required for the employees ,it leads to better performance Output. The importance of employee must be considered by the organization which will lead to the good relationship & involvement towards the job .

CONCLUSION:
In todays competitive Business world, employees are expecting more and more from the employers. With increased change in needs and expectation of the employees and the employers need to be cautious in choosing the right fit and giving a realistic job preview and engage the associates

through their engagement activities to build passion, commitment and


alignment with the organizations strategies and goals.
