Broadband Access : Network and Technologies

What is Broadband ?
Broadband refers to telecommunication in which a wide band of frequencies is available to transmit information. Because a wide band of frequencies is available, information can be multiplexed and sent on many different frequencies or channels within the band at the same time, allowing more information to be transmitted in a given amount of time As per recent Broadband Policy of GOI,access rate over 256 Kbps will be considered as Broadband access

What is DSL

Less than 4 KHz for POTS More than 4 KHz for data from PC. POTS signals are given to the Voice switch and the data is fed to the ISP router or IP switch or IP network

Working of Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)

Makes copper based existing external plant suitable for broadband access. Digital transport for subscriber access Allow multiple forms of data, voice and video to be carried Transmission technology optimised to exploit the ordinary telephone lines for higher bit rates.

What is ADSL?
ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. It is a technology that allows copper telephone pairs to be used to provide a broadband connection. It provides always-on Internet connection that is automatically established once the PC and ADSL modem are switched on

What are the benefits of ADSL?

Fast downloads At least 4.5 times and upto 140 times faster than dial-up connection .
Always on connection . Telephone and Internet access can be used together . No telephone call charges .

Cost effective way to access Internet.

What is an IP address?
When you connect to the Internet, your PC is automatically allocated an IP(Internet Protocol) address to identify it to the outside world. There are two types of IP addresses, dynamic and static. Dynamic IP changes from session to session while static always remains same.

What is Domain Name system?

Computers connected to the Internet have unique numerical addresses called Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, so that the electronic information gets delivered to the right place on the Internet. Domain Names are the familiar, easy to recall names for the computers on the Internet. The Domain Name System (DNS) translates these domain names to the IP addresses of the computers.
