4 : MOMENTUM

At End Of The Lesson, You Should Knows:

1. DEFINITION OF MOMENTUM AND FORMULAE 2. PRINCIPLE OF CONSERVATION OF MOMENTUM 3. TYPES OF CONVERSION MOMENTUM 4. APPLICATIONS IN MOMENTUM

1) What is MOMENTUM??
Momentum is defined as the product of MASS and VELOCITY Momentum = Mass x Velocity

p = mv
S.I. unit of momentum is kg m s-1 or N s.

ADD NOTES!!
Momentum is a vector quantity

The direction of the momentum is the same as the direction of the velocity.

2) PRINCIPLE OF CONSERVATION OF MOMENTUM??

the total momentum of that system remains constant in the absence of the net external force on a system is zero. the total momentum before collision = Total momentum after collision F = 0

the total momentum before collision

the total momentum after collision

m1u1+ m2u2

m1v1 +m2v2

3) TYPES OF CONSERVATION MOMENTUM??

COLLISION 1) ELASTIC

EXPLOSION

2) INELASTIC

1) ELASTIC
Diagram Formulae The total momentum is conserve The total kinetic energy is conserve

Before collision :
u1 During collision:

m1 u2 m1 m2

m2

After collision: v1

m1 v2

m2

EXAMPLE
Given m1 = 2.0 kg, m2 = 3.0 kg, u1 = 5 ms -1 , u2 = 2 ms -1 and v1 = 2 ms -1 . What is the velocity, v2 after collision?
Before collision

After collision

QUESTION
Two trolleys P and Q of masses 2 kg and 1 kg respectively. Trolley P and Q move towards each other with initial velocities of 3 ms -1 and 2 ms -1 respectively. After colliding, they move separately in the same direction, Calculate the final velocity of P is 1.5ms -1

2) INELASTIC

EXAMPLE
Given m1 = 3.0 kg, m2 = 2.0 kg, u1 = 5 ms -1 , u2 = 1 ms -1 and v1 = 2 ms -1 . What is the common velocity after collision?

EXAMPLE
A cannon ball of mass,m=5 kg is firedfrom cannon of mass, M = 800kg with a speed of 40 ms -1. Find the recoil velocity of the cannon ball?

BEFORE

AFTER

EXAMPLE
A boy standing on skate board is moving at A ms -1 along straight line constant speed of 10 carrying A bowling ball in his hand. The mass of the boy and the ball 50 kg and 5kg respectively. While moving, the boy throws the ball horizontally and it is observed that his speed slows down to 9.5 ms -1 . what is the speed of the ball when the ball is thrown?
