AESTHETICS OF DESIGN

Presented by M.G.ISWARIYA [11MAT03]

DESIGN
Realization of a concept or idea into a configuration, drawing, model, mould, pattern, plan or specification and which helps achieve the item's designated objective(s).

aesthetics
Philosophical discipline dealing with beauty, its perception and arts. Aesthetics is the science of sensual perception. Aesthetics means Sensuality, Perception, Elite, Proportion, form, Subjectivity, Harmony, Cosmetical, Poetics, Conformity, Sensitivity, Virtuality,

ELEMENTS OF DESIGN

Line path of a point Shape perceivable area Form combination of two or more shapes. Value relative light and darkness Color color theory basics Space height , width and the illusion of depth Texture Actual or simulated tactile quality

Line to the continuous Line is the basic element that refers

movement of a point along a surface. It is the basic component of a shape drawn on paper. Lines and curves are the basic building blocks of two dimensional shapes. Every line has length, thickness, and direction. There are curved, horizontal, vertical, diagonal, zigzag, wavy, parallel, dash, and dotted lines.

Vertical lines strength, pride, dignity

Curved -- grace, charm &feminity

Horizontal- easy, restful

Diagonal lines forceful, strong, dynamic

Shape
Silhouette or contour of an object. A shape is defined as an area that stands out from the space next to or around it due to a defined or implied boundary, or because of differences of value, color, or texture. They can be geometric or organic. Natural shapes forming patterns on wood or stone may help increase visual appeal in designing. For e.g... In a landscape, natural shapes, such as trees contrast with geometric such as houses.

form
Form may be created by the combining of two or more shapes. Form is any three dimensional object. Form can be measured, from top to bottom (height), side to side (width), and from back to front (depth). Form is also defined by light and dark. There are two types of form, geometric (man-made) and natural (organic form). It may be enhanced by tone, texture and color. It can be illustrated or constructed.

Difference between shape and form

value
Value is an element of art that refers to the relationship between light and dark on a surface or object and also helps with Form. It gives objects depth and perception. Value is also referred to as tone.

color
Color is seen either by the way light reflects off a surface, or in colored light sources. Color and particularly contrasting color is also used to draw the attention to a particular part of the image. There are primary colors, secondary colors, and tertiary colors.

Complementary colors are colors that are opposite to each other on the color wheel. Complementary colors are used to create contrast. Analogous colors are colors that are found side by side on the color wheel. These can be used to create color harmony. Monochromatic colors are tints and shades of one color.

space
Space is the area provided for a particular purpose. It may have two dimensions (length and width), such as a floor, or it may have three dimensions (length, width, and height). Space refers to the distances or areas around, between or within components of a piece. There are two types of space: positive and negative space.
Positive space refers to the space of a shape representing the subject matter. Negative space refers to the space around and between the subject matter.

Texture
Texture is perceived surface quality. In art, there are two types of texture: tactile and implied.
Tactile texture (real texture) is the way the surface of an object actually feels. Examples of this include sandpaper, cotton balls, tree bark, puppy fur, etc. Implied texture is the way the surface of an object looks like it feels. The texture may look rough, fizzy, gritty, but cannot actually be felt.

principles OF DESIGN

Scale Proportion Rhythm Balance Direction Emphasis

scale
Scale is the association between the size of an object or image to that of its surroundings Scale as determined by design elements. Scale is produced by introducing into the design a unit which acts as a visual measuring rod; the size of which humans perceive easily & naturally.
Heroic/Monumental Scale: making a room or object seem larger than it is. Natural/Human Scale: establishing right size visually Intimate scale: making the room or object smaller than it is in actuality.

proportion
Proportion is the feeling of unity created when all parts (sizes, amounts, or number) relate well with each other. Proportion refers to the relative size and scale of the various elements in a design. The issue is the relationship between objects, or parts, of a whole.

rhythm
Rhythm is created when one or more elements of design are used repeatedly to create a feeling of organized movement. Variety is essential to keep rhythm exciting and active, and moving the viewer around the artwork. Rhythm is a movement in which some elements occur regularly. Rhythm can be created through repetition, radiation and gradation.

Three ways rhythm can be employed are:

Static - the repetition of similar or identical elements; Progressive - repeated elements increasing or decreasing in size Continuous - elements in flowing movement (e.g. a wave washing into shore).

balance
Balance is the concept of visual equilibrium, and relates to our physical sense of balance. It is the distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, texture, and space. If the design was a scale these elements should be balanced to make a design feel stable. There are three types of balance:
Symmetrical Asymmetrical Radial

In symmetrical balance, the elements used on one side of the design are similar to those on the other side. In asymmetrical balance, the sides are different but still look balanced. In radial balance, the elements are arranged around a central point and may be similar.

direction
Direction is the specific alignment of elements in a design. Often lines, shapes, or textures are configured toward a certain point or area.
Horizontal placement suggests calmness, stability and tranquility. Vertical placement gives a feeling of alertness and formality. Oblique arrangement often suggests movement and action.

emphasis
Emphasis is where some elements have a greater prominence or significance than others in a composition or form. Emphasis is the part of the design that catches the viewers attention. Usually the artist will make one area stand out by contrasting it with other areas. The area will be different in size, color, texture, shape, etc.
