An appositive is a word or group of words that identifies or renames another word in a sentence.

Look at this example ..

During the dinner conversation,

Clifford, the messiest eater at the table, ate mashed potatoes like an erupting volcano.

Have to remember,
If a word is an appositives it is NOT the subject. Examples :

Robert, a really good artist, is making a new painting.

Subject Appositive Verb

A really good artist, Robert is making a new painting.

Appositive Subject Verb

Punctuate the appositive correctly

The important point to remember

is that a nonessential appositive is always separated from the rest of the sentence with comma(s).

When the appositive begins the

sentence
A hot-tempered tennis player, Robbie charged the umpire and tried to crack the poor man's skull with a racket.

When the appositive interrupts the

sentence,
Robbie, a hot-tempered tennis player, charged the umpire and tried to crack the poor man's skull with a racket.

And when the appositive ends the

sentence,
Upset by the bad call, the crowd cheered Robbie, a hot-tempered tennis player who charged the umpire and tried to crack the poor man's skull with a racket.

Appositives that Repeat a Noun

renames a noun in a sentence, it may instead repeat a noun for the sake of clarity and emphasis

(Santha Rama Rau, "An invitation to Serenity")

Negative Appositives
Most appositives identify what someone or

something is, but there are also negative appositives that identify what someone or something is not
Negative appositives begin with a word such

as not, never, or rather than.

specialists, are primarily responsible for quality assurance.

Multiple Appositives
Two, three, or even more appositives may

appear alongside the same noun

As long as we don't overwhelm the reader

with too much information at one time, a double or triple appositive can be an effective way of adding supplementary details to a sentence.

Saint Petersburg, a city of almost five-

million people, Russia's secondlargest and northernmost metropolis, was designed three centuries ago by Peter the Great.
