ENERGY

Energy is the pulse of morden society. It is the ultimate need of every individual.

E LECTRICITY

Electricity generation and transmission is one of the most essential sector in meeting modern energy needs. By 2040,worldwide electricity demand will be 80% higher than it was in 2010 -Estimate of Exxon Mobil

GRID

Making the electric grid intelligent through the use of information communication technology(ICT) and geospatial technology is referred to as SMART GRID.

GRID

TECHNOLOGY AND ICT IN SMART

IT systems like SAP,SCADA(supervisory control and data acquisition) and (DMS)Document management system have played a significant role in mordernisation of electric grids. Geospatial technology helps in mapping of electrical network with all the required attributes on a GIS base map. -Jayant Sinha, associate Vice-prisident,SPANCO Ltd.

I NTEGRATION

OF GEOSPATIAL

TECHNOLOGY AND ICT

The integration of GIS with SCADA and DMS can be done by adapting Common Information Module(CIM). CIM uses standard interfaces for the integration of heterogenous systems .

Smart grids are equipped with thousands of sensors and operators.

Sensors such as synchrophrasors are installed on transmission lines and comprised of GPS synchronised clocks. This allows the real time monitoring of system disturbances and imbalances.

ACCORDING TO ESRI-

GIS can aid the electric utilities companies in

BENEFITS OF SMART GRID

Heal itself after power outages or power quality problems

Motivate consumers to actively participate in operations of the grid through variable pricing
Resist man-made attacks and natural disruptions Provide higher quality power that will save money wasted from outages Accommodate multiple generation sources (e.g., renewables, fuel cells, microturbines) and storage options Enable electricity markets to flourish Operate with greater efficiency Enable higher penetration of renewable (but intermittent) power generation sources

S MART GRID - ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLY

Electricity generation and transmission contributes to 40% of the global CO2 emissions. What is needed is a new approach that significantly increases the efficiency of the entire electrical delivery system. This approach will not only increase reliability, but will also reduce energy in the delivery process and thereby reduce greenhouse house emissions. We call this new approach Smart Grid. Implementation of smart grids will lead to an annual reduction of over 20 giga tonnes of CO2 by 2050. - International Energy Agency,2010
