Happenings at Dunwoody Elementary School

Canned Food Drive for Local Womens Shelter


Dunwoody Elementary School students have been collecting canned foods and personal hygiene items for a local womens shelter since Spring Break. The drive, sponsored by the Dunwoody Elementary 4-H Club and Sign Language Clubs and Georgia United Credit Union, collected over seven boxes of items. Faculty club sponsors: 4-H Club, Mrs. Carla Nugent; Sign Language Club: Ms. Melanie Anderson, Ms. Becky Whittaker, and Ms. Patti Walter. On May 3rd (PreK-2nd) and May 4th (3rd 5th), Dunwoody Elementary School students participated in May Day. The school partnered with the Ga. Aquarium and other businesses to create two days of Science and Environmental Outdoor Activities in which the students participated in a variety of fun and educational hands-on learning:

May Day Bracelets


UV Bracelets method: make a bracket with UV Beads

May Day Compost Station


Recycle/Compost Station method: students will listen to presentation about composting, recycling, impact of recycling on environment. students will then practice composting, and separate recyclable trash.

May Day Draw in the Woods


Draw in the Woods Method: Students will sketch and/or color objects in observation of nature around them.

May Day Gravity Shoot (Parachute Play)


Gravity Shoot (Parachute Play). method: students will observe the behavior of objects of different weights and density with respect to gravity

May Day Life Cycle of Trash


Life Cycle of Trash Presentation -Billy Kidwell of American Disposal Services method: students will listen to presentation about life cycle of trash: financial and environmental costs of landfills, efficiency of the recycle process.

May Day Science Reading


Science Reading method: students will listen to science-themed books read aloud by parent volunteer Mrs. Gurin

Last fall, the Georgia Aquarium hosted a Regional Coastal America Ocean Art Contest for grades K-College. The purpose of this Ocean Art Contest was to draw upon youth's artistic expression to convey the importance of ocean, coasts and Great Lakes. Winning artwork from each of the regional sites will advance to the national competition later in March. Dunwoody elementary is happy to announce our regional winners and runner-ups:
