The need for food assistance increased dramatically in the recession. Need continues to remain high.
SNAP is nations frontline defense against hunger. TEFAP supports charities that help fill in the gaps.

Food Banks Fill Gaps Unmet by SNAP; SNAP Benefits Dont Last the Whole Month
SNAP benefits supplement a households food budget but are often insufficient to last the month, causing many participants to rely regularly on food banks. Most SNAP participants run through their benefits by the third week of the month (day 21). SNAP benefits average less than $1.50 per person per meal. Over half of Feeding America clients receiving SNAP (58%) report visiting a food pantry at least 6 months out of the year.
Food banks have seen TEFAP support decline even as need remains at historic highs.
