Introduction
Non conventional energy generation using wind. Wind energy generated by two different turbine.
Vertical axis wind turbine(VAWT) Horizontal axis wind turbine(HAWT)

In our project we use the Vertical axis wind turbine(VAWT). Energy generated by VAWT using in street lighting for energy saving purpose and it is controlled by microcontroller.

Wind Energy
Wind energy is the kinetic energy of air in motion. E=1/2mv2 Wind power is the conversion of wind energy into a useful form of energy, such as using wind turbine to make electricity. We can not convert all of the power in the wind to Mechanical (then electrical) power

Losses caused by

Some of the wind goes around (not through) the hoop You cant slow the outgoing wind to zero velocity Frictional losses from high velocity wind

Type of Wind Turbine

Many types of turbines exist today and their designs are usually inclined towards one of the two categories. 1. Horizontal-axis wind turbines (HAWTs)

2. vertical-axis wind turbines(VAWTs)

As the name pertains, each turbine is distinguished by the orientation of their rotor shafts.

Vertical -axis wind turbines (VAWTs) Vertical axis wind turbines VAWTs are typically developed only for the urban deployment Changes in wind direction have no negative effects on this type of turbine because it does not need to be positioned into the wind direction.

Horizontal-axis wind turbines (HAWTs) The propeller-type rotor is mounted on a horizontal axis. HAWTs are sensitive to the changes in wind direction and turbulence which have a negative effect on performance due to the required repositioning of the turbine into the wind flow

Working of VAWT
VAWT are a type of wind turbine where the main rotor shaft is set vertically and the main components are located at the base of the turbine. VAWT can catch the wind from all direction and at lower wind speed than horizontal axis ones. If direction of blades is change than dynamo also generate electricity because dynamo does not depends on direction of rotation.

Advantage of VAWT
Can accept changes of wind direction with no problem. Generator can be on the ground for more easy access, rather than up in the air. Generally begin rotating at lower speeds Lower susceptibility to cross-wind

Application

Street Lighting
When vehicle runs in the road then wind will come then blade will rotate and electric energy generate and stored in battery If vehicle rotate right to left or left to right then there are no effect on VAWT During night this energy used as street lighting.

Microcontroller
Street light can controlled by microcontroller Using light dependent resister(LDR) to detect the intensity of light LDR sends the signal to the microcontroller and microcontroller adjust intensity of light.
