Introduction
Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA)
o

SCADA is an acronym for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition.

SCADA systems are used to monitor and control a plant or equipment in industries
o o

SCADA system enables a site operator to monitor and control processes

These systems encompass the transfer of data between a SCADA central host computer and a number of Remote Terminal Units (RTUs)
o o A SCADA system

gathers information , transfers the information back to a central site, and display the information in a logical and organized fashion

Components of the SCADA system

SCADA systems consist of: Remote Unit: One or more field data interface devices, usually Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), which interface to field sensing devices and local control switchboxes and valve actuators. Communication Mode: A communications system used to transfer data between field data interface devices and control units and the computers in the SCADA central host. The system can be radio, telephone, cable, satellite, etc., or any combination of these.

Master Unit: A central host computer server or servers (sometimes called a SCADA Center, master station, or Master Terminal Unit (MTU).
Software (SCADA HMI Software): A collection of standard and/or custom software [sometimes called Human Machine Interface (HMI) software or Man Machine Interface (MMI) software] systems used to provide the SCADA central host and operator terminal application, support the communications system, and monitor and control remotely located field data interface devices

Objectives
Remote sites data monitoring. Monitoring of voltages, currents, power and frequency of power distributed system. Transfer of data using GSM communication. Collect & manage data of the remote areas. Send SMS to a monitoring center. Establishing a Human Machine Interface to monitor the data in a well mannered fashion.

Methodology
o Electrical parameters (Voltages, currents and frequency) will be
measured at remote site.

o We will multiplex the data of above mentioned parameters.

o We will connect Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) to GSM module by
using microcontroller.

o GSM module will receive data from RTUs and will send SMS packets to
control room.

o In control room GSM module will receive SMS packets & will place it in
SCADA (HMI software in PC).

o We will connect the GSM module with PC by using serial port.
