GLOBAL POLITICAL SITUATION

KIRNA LADHA VIKAS LALL

INDIA

Democratic Republic with a Parliamentary system of Government

The President is elected by members of an electoral college consisting of elected members of both Houses of Parliament and Legislative Assemblies of the states, with suitable weightage given to each vote.
Prime Minister communicates all decisions of the Council of Ministers relating to administration of affairs of the Union and proposals for legislation to the President. A recognised political party has been classified as a National Party or a State Party. If a political party is recognised in four or more states, it is considered as a National Party. The Rajya Sabha consists of 245 members. Of these, 233 represent states and union territories and 12 members are nominated by the President. Elections to the Rajya Sabha are indirect; members are elected by the elected members of Legislative Assemblies of the concerned states. The Lok Sabha is composed of representatives of the people chosen by direct election on the basis of universal adult suffrage. As of today, the Lok Sabha consists of 545 members with 2 members nominated by the President to represent the Anglo-Indian Community.

United Kingdom

The British political system is headed by a monarchy but essentially the powers of the monarch as head of state - currently Queen Elizabeth II - are ceremonial. In classical political theory, there are three arms of the state: The executive the Ministers who run the country and propose new laws The legislature the elected body that passes new laws The judiciary the judges and the courts who ensure that everyone obeys the laws The British Parliament is often called Westminster because it is housed in a distinguished building in central London called the Palace of Westminster. The British Parliament like most in the world is bicameral, that is there are two houses or chambers. The only exceptions to this practice around the world are some small countries such as Israel and New Zealand. The House of Commons is the lower chamber but the one with the most authority. The House of Commons currently comprises 650 Members of Parliament or MPs

The House of Lords is the upper chamber but the one with less authority. Its main roles are to revise legislation and keep a check on Government by scrutinising its activities.

CRISIS OF EURO ZONE

Greece, Portugal, Ireland, Italy and Spain stand on the brink of debt defaults which would have a massive impact on the European banking system causing contagion across the EU and presenting the Euro Zone with the prospect of collapse. Austerity resulted in mass struggle in Greece and in France with major protests including general strikes in Spain, Italy and Portugal. A collapse of the Euro would not only threaten the existence of the EU itself but would have uncharted implications for the world economy potentially greater than the sub-prime banking crisis of 2008. It would be a greater event than the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008 President Jose Manuel Barroso proposal to issue Euro bonds in order to take collective responsibility for the situation fell when it emerged that a move in this direction would split Merkels coalition in Germany wide open. The German Constitutional Court added to this by saying that it would regard such a move as illegal. In Greece the most draconian measures (now called hyper austerity) are being demanded by the IMF. With its economy already collapsing new demands are being placed on Greece in order release the next tranche of IMF money without which it cannot pay the wages of state employees from the middle of October. These measures include massive new layoffs in the public sector and wage cuts of up to 40% and a new property tax which people have to pay together with their electricity bills

Situation in US

The government of the United States is based on a written constitution, the shortest in the world in fact. This constitution consists of a Preamble, seven Articles, and 27 Amendments. US exists under a two-party system. The two major parties in America are the Democratic and Republican parties

the US Government is divided into three branches so that no one branch has all the power. Each branch has its own purpose: to make the laws, execute the laws, and interpret the laws.
In order to further protect the citizens, the constitution set up a system of checks and balances. Basically, each branch of government has a certain number of checks it can use to ensure the other branches do not become too powerful. For example, the president can veto legislation, the Supreme Court can declare acts of Congress unconstitutional, and the Senate must approve treaties and presidential appointments.

JUDICIAL BRANCH

World politics underwent a fundamental change in 1991 when the socialist Soviet Union and her East European allies joined the capitalist economic system.

The change should have brought the world benefits, however we didnt get the Peace Dividend that was promised by the reduction of arms expenditure defence spending did decrease in the United States but the money went into domestic law enforcement
When the United States attacked Iraq in 1990 it was said to be the consequences for Iraqs invasion of Kuwait. Other reasons for the attack was the United States determination to secure Iraqs oil for itself And another was that the U.S. feared that Iraq would change its currency from the Dollar to the German Mark or the Japanese Yen and taking it out of the dollar market would seriously damage the U.S. economy as the Arab world had vast investments in the U.S. Also in 1992 President Bush senior made it clear at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro that the United States way of life was not negotiable and it would not cooperate with the Kyoto protocol to reduce greenhouse gasses. In Africa there were skirmishes too, and in 1998 a chemical plant in Sudan was bombed because the U.S. said it was a chemical weapons factory it wasnt it was a pharmaceutical plant and the only source of vital medicines for poor countries.

This was when President Clinton made his anti-terrorism speech in the United Nations saying it was their obligation to deny all support and sanctuary to terrorists. It was during this time that the Republican controlled U.S. Congress passed the Iraqi Liberation Bill that virtually called for the overthrow of Saddam Hussein.

Presidential election of November 2000, the most disputed in Americas history, but republican George W. Bush was determined to be president.
By the middle of his first year though, his popularity had fallen to an all time low. Then later in that first year came September 11th.

RUSSIA

The executive power is split between the President and the Prime Minister, but the President is the dominant figure. The legislature is represented by the Federal Assembly of Russia. It has two chambers: the State Duma the lower house, and the Federation Council the upper house. The judicial power is vested in courts and administered by the Ministry of Justice.

The President is the head of state and is elected by popular vote every six years for a maximum of two consecutive terms

Government duties are split between a number of ministries, some of which, in turn, have federal services and federal agencies answerable to them. The head of government, the prime minister, is appointed by the president and confirmed by the State Duma.
