Raw – the BIG picture

What is Raw
Digital Raw file
• Raw data from camera sensor
• Metadata (capture data; camera presets on contrast, saturation,
sharpness etc.)

Raw files come in propriety formats (.CR2,

.NEF)

All Raw files share the same

• Basic properties
• Basic advantages
Raw – the BIG picture

Camera Sensors and Data

• Raw captures are Grayscale
• Luminance data
• Color information
• Raw captures need to go through
demosaicing
• Mosaic sensors record color by color filters
• Raw converters interpolate missing color

Raw Control
Raw convertors also control all of the below:

Tone Noise

Color rendering Sharpening

White Balance Antialiasing

Output to chosen color space, bit depth

Exposure and Linear/Non-linear
data
Exposure and Linear/Non-linear data

Linearity
Digital sensors perform Linear capture

Working color spaces are between gamma 1.8-2.2 (non-

linear)

Our senses are non-linear

Tone-mapping

Exposure and Linear/Non-linear data

Linearity
Digital sensors perform Linear capture

Example: A 12 bit raw file (212 = 4096 levels)

Exposure and Linear/Non-linear data

Exposure
Underexpose
• Wastage of bits from digital capture
• Introducing noise into shadows/midtones

Overexpose
• Risk blowing out highlights
• Adobe Camera Raw plug-in can rescue blown
highlights

Woes of Edits
EVERY edit in photoshop is destructive.

Posterisation and Detail loss will occur.

These problems show themselves more in a 8

bit file than a
16 bit file

It is not the end of the world!

Raw Limitations
Raw Limitations

Downsides to Shooting Raw

1) Time spent processing images vs time
spent shooting
more images

4. Large file sizes

6. Non-universal format raises issues of long-

term support

8. Adobe DNG
Adobe Camera Raw
Adobe Camera Raw

Why people use it

1) Universal

3) Industrial–strength features

5) Integration with Photoshop (continuous

workflow)
