What is Jib Cranes?

A jib crane is a stationary or fixed crane that utilizes a cantilevered bridge (girder) supported from a stationary vertical support. A jib crane consists of a hoist attached to a rotating arm that functions as a manipulator. The arm can rotate 360 degrees and is mounted on a wall or attached to a floor-mounted support. Jib cranes consist of a swinging boom which is attached to a column or wall mount system that offers a large coverage area. Jib cranes can be used to support a variety of lifting devices.

Main Features of Jib Cranes:

Precision tapered roller bearings in top pivot and turning assemblies provide smooth operation and long life. Full supporting triangular base plate gussets are used (in lieu of struts) to minimize crane deflection, thus making it easier to accurately position loads. Independent head assembly, installed separately from the boom for easier installation. Recessed bearing assembly allows greatly reduced clearances needed for installation. Bolted head/boom connection which permits separate installation and provides maximum lift for the hoist, since it can be installed very close to the underside of the lower ceiling obstruction for greater headroom. In-head totally enclosed, bottom entry collector assembly allows the option of easily adding power to the hoist for 360 degree rotation at the time of or after purchase. Optional power rotation Optional festoon electrification

Specification of Jib Cranes :

Specification of the jib cranes can be done by considering the following points:The Cap Weight The cap on a jib crane is at the extreme end of the arm length . The cap weighs from 0.5 to 5 tonne and arm length from 3 to 8 mtrs.Lift from 3mtrs to 12 meters.. The Beam Type The jib crane has a horizontal arm and vertical column. The Base Plate (foundation plate) The base diameter is the measurement of the width of the jib crane's base, which connects to the floor. The base diameters are 24, 26, 28 and 30 inches, depending on the capacity, arm length, height of column. The Foundation Bolt Circle The foundation bolt circle is the number of round hole that holds foundation plate with foundation . The bolt number and diameter depends on the capacity of crane arm length, vertical height of column .Minimum no. of falls are 6 and maximum12,diameter of foundation bolt varies from 20mm to 50mm.

Design Calculation of Jib Cranes

Data : 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Capacity of Crane : ----Arm Length : ----mm Lift : --- mm Overall Height : ---- mm Support given at : ----m m Deflection allowed as per I.S. 15419 Specification a)FOR WALL MOUNTED JIB CRANE = Arm Length 250 b)FOR COLOUMN MOUNTED = Column Length + Arm Length 300 When load is lifted at extreme end.

Reaction at point A= =W x A kgs. =X x B kgcm. Therefore, X=WxA kgs. B

Where, W=weight lifted at the extreme end X= reaction in kgs A=arm length B=support given to roller

Reaction at Post = capacity of crane x arm length 1200 Deflection of Arm Smax = WL3 mm 3 E Ixx Where w=capacity of crane or load L=length of arm in cm. E=Young`s constant Ixx=moment of inertia Therefore Arm length < WL3 mm (B) 300 3 E Ixx

Deflection of Column xL3 x(L-b) 3 E Ixx 3 E Ixx

= Smax

Column length < xL3 x(L-b) 300 3 E Ixx 3 E Ixx Therefore, Deflection of Arm + Deflection of Column < Total deflection of Jib crane
Design Calculation for Pivot Points
The strength of Pivot shaft is calculated s follows:Material : EN 8 trength on the basis of shear = Area x Shear = ----kgs..

Mounting of Jib Cranes

There are two methods of mounting of jib Cranes 1) Nut Leveling Method

2)Shim Leveling Method

Steps for Installation of Jib cranes

1. Make the foundation of jib cranes properly by leveling the surface. 2. Spread grout over foundation approximately 1 thick and equal to the base plate size 3. Lower base and column assembly over anchor bolts and set on foundation grout surface. 4. Tighten anchor bolts against grout (grout should be solid between base plate and foundation surface). 5. After grout has hardened, bolt boom and column together with bolts provided. 6. Level boom by turning adjustment bracket jackscrews. 7. Slowly rotate boom and check for any obstructions; remove obstructions. 8. Tighten all bolts. Unit will be ready for operation.

Troubleshooting
Symptom Jib Crane movement is stiff. Possible Cause Swivel assembly bearings require lubrication. Clevis bushings are worn or require lubrication. Dirt or obstruction in rail. Damaged or bent rail. Remedy Check locknut adjustment and lubricate bearings. Inspect bushings and replace if worn. Clean all parts and inspect for wear. Inspect rail and replace if damaged or bent. Determine cause of damage prior to operation. Inspect wheels and rollers. Replace damaged parts. Inspect and replace damaged parts. Clean all parts and inspect for wear. Level components to specifications. Reduce load to within rated capacity. Check and repair leaks. Tighten fittings if loose. Replace electrical cable. Refer to hoist, positioner or handling device service manual for additional repair instructions.

Change in rolling effort or erratic operation.

Unusual noises.

Worn or damaged trolley wheels and/or guide rollers. Broken trolley guide roller and/or wheel. Dirt or obstruction in rail.

Load creeping.

Jib boom not level. Jib crane overloaded.

Hoist, positioner or handling device Leaking or damaged air hose, fittings or malfunctioning. electrical cable.

Jib Crane Applications

Circular coverage areas Outdoor applications such as loading docks Applications underneath large bridge cranes Open areas where the jib can serve several areas Machining or assembly applications where it can be overlapped with other jibs to provide staged coverage
