Objective
Developing efficient I.C engines with improved breathing capacity at high speeds and peak torque at startup conditions.

INTRODUCTION
Valve overlap is the amount of time the intake and exhaust valves are both open at once. Less overlap produces a smooth idle and slow speed torque, but poor high speed performance because there is not enough time for complete scavenging to occur. More valve overlap allows better engine breathing at high speeds, but poor performance at low speeds resulting in higher exhaust emissions. Engines with fixed valve timing can only operate 4 most efficiently at one specific speed.

NEED FOR VVT

Engines with variable valve timing can operate efficiently at a wider range of speeds, and deliver better performance at high speeds VVT allows the lift, duration or timing of the intake and/or exhaust valves to be changed while the engine is in operation.

TYPES OF VVT
There are two types of variable valve timing cam phasing cam changing

CAM PHASING VVT

Cam phasing VVT varies valve timing by shifting the phase angle of the camshaft. At high engine speeds, the inlet camshaft phasing can be rotated in advance to enable earlier intake, increasing the amount of valve overlap. This is controlled by the engine management system, and actuated by hydraulic valve gears.

VANE TYPE MECHANISM TO CHANGE THE PHASE ANGLE OF THE CAM SHAFT

11

Vane is pressed by the hydraulic pressure and rotates inside the housing to change the phase angle of the cam shaft.

CAM CHANGING VVT

Cam changing VVT incorporates two sets of cam profiles one for low and mid range rpm and another for high rpm operation. At engine speeds above 5000 to 6000 rpm, the engine ECU activates an oil pressure controlled pin that locks the three rocker arms together. The center rocker arm follows a larger and more aggressive profile, transferring its 13 movement to the intake valves.

Advantages
With today's VVT systems, engines are so efficient at reducing emissions that the separate EGR valve has become virtually extinct. VVT can be coupled with another new technology, active fuel management, which allows selective deactivation of multiple cylinders under cruise when full power isn't required. More oxygen is supplied through the air intake valve as more fuel is injected into the combustion chamber. Power and torque is maximized due to larger scale combustion. Optimized fuel to air ratio ensures the air-fuel mixture is combusted more thoroughly.
