To protect the drivers & workforce from hazards that are associated with driving. Improve the awareness about the causes of accident and better prepared to avoid them.

Aim of this Session THE OVERALL AIM OF THIS SESSION IS TO MINIMISE DEATH, INJURY AND DAMAGE RESULTING FROM ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS.

Causes of Death

Above Figure shows, traffic crashes as a cause of all deaths spike in 15-24 age group, and then quickly drop off among older population groups. Worldwide, in 2010, traffic crashes were the second greatest single cause of death for persons aged 15-29, and the greatest for men in the same age group.

 Since the first motor vehicle drove out onto the road, over 40,000,000 people have died world wide 40,000, in road traffic accidents. accidents.  World wide each year nearly one million people are killed, and between 15 20 million are injured in road accidents  637 died and 6,636 persons injured last year in Oman, one of the main cause was speeding. speeding.

Main Causes of Accidents: Speeding, negligence, drinking, overtaking, weather, sudden stop, Not leaving safe distance, bad behavior, vehicle condition, road condition, use of GSM.

DRIVERS EXCUSES
Suddenly the vehicle in front stopped. Everyone else was speeding. I Slammed the brakes on but I couldn t stop in time. I didn t see the traffic sign. The traffic light turned yellow when I was going through the junction. Suddenly a car pulled out from nowhere. The road was slippery. Suddenly the cow/donkey/camel appeared in front of me.

DRIVING CONDITION IN OMAN


Light: Too much light, Too little light, impaired visibility, high beams from oncoming vehicles, high beams from vehicles behind. Road: Narrow roads, road construction, potholes, graded roads, hilly roads, winding roads, wadi crossing. Animals: Goats, donkeys, camels, cows.

Night Driving Speed Limit Dust code Park off the road, ensure no obstruction to others. Night time keep the hazard lights on. Do not leave the vehicle. Stop any passing vehicle to pass the message. Do not panic stay calm.

1 READ

How can you prevent Rollovers?


Speed? Concentration? Tired? Night? Night? Dust? Wrong reaction? Slow down! Concentrate! STOP, rest, have a nap! Do NOT drive at night! night! Do NOT go into a dust-cloud! dustTrain yourself mentally: NOT to brake! NOT to over-steer! overCheck pressure regularly! Check condition regularly! Replace poor tires!

DUST CODE
When you are behind a vehicle that makes a dust cloud: Never drive into the dust cloud: stay back!! Stay at least 4 second behind the dust cloud. Never overtake in a dust cloud.

Driving long distances without breaks. Driving night, early afternoon or when body wants sleep. Driving alone, driving on long, boring road Travelling frequently, working shifts. Taking medicine, alcohol, drugs. Drivers with bad sleep habits. Poor diet, dehydration, sickness.

Get Rest when you feel these


Drift from your lane. Can not concentrate. Keep yawning. Can not remember the last few miles. Can not control your eyes. Miss traffic signs or tailgate accidentally. Have trouble keeping your head up. You mumble or mix up your words. During the use of GSM

PREVENT FATIGUE
Plan your journey in advance Arrange pre-departure meeting with your team. Arrive before dark. Have at lease 8 hours sleep. Have your radio/cassettes on. Have break during the journey. If possible use 2 drivers for long journey. STOP and REST if you feel tired.

Human Behaviour
Over 90% of road accidents are due to poor driver behaviour. Three things influences human behviour they are: 1. Individual Factors: Attitudes, motivation, knowledge. 2. Organizational Factors: Competence control, communication, co-operation. 3. Job Factors: Procedures, the work environment, decision making.

Negative Attitude
Not planning for a journey. Not thinking of their fitness for a journey. Not following road safety rules. Not thinking others on the road. Not giving way to anyone. Not thinking about the consequences. They think accidents won t happen to them. Not using Seat belt They think rules don t apply to them. They want to finish the job quickly.

The driver must:

PREVENTIVE MEASURES

Complete a 360 degree walk around vehicle check up before starting journey and ensure weather condition. Toolbox talks/Training, service and Maintenance Fasten load properly, aware other road users. Keep checking the speedometer. Do not cross flowing wadi. Do pull off the road when you see convey and wait until it has passed. Take a short break. To be trained on desert driving. PREVENTIVE MEASURES

Personal should not be resting under vehicle. Check vehicles for proper operation and not drive if there is reason to believe the vehicle is not safe. Ask yourself Do I really need to over take ? Assessment of drivers quarterly or half yearly. The possession, transportation or sale of illegal drugs, or unauthorized alcoholic beverages or firearms is prohibited. Drive defensively, safely, courteously and responsibly.

Ensure your own safety and that of others. Comply with Government, Company and client Road Safety rules & regulations. Know the hazards and use preventive/control measures. Use correct PPE, tools and Equipment. Conduct vehicle check before starting. Report Journey/Transport Manager. Keep the vehicle always clean. Attend Meeting.
