Green Jobs Demand and Supply Prospects


Between 2009 and 2013, a number of green jobs will continually increase by 9.0% (annual average increase rate, approximately 34,000 jobs), a total of green jobs in 2013 is estimated to be 480,000 jobs. On the other hand, green related jobs will increase by 5.0%, and a total number of green related jobs in 2013 is estimated to be 1,420,000. While green jobs in manufacturing and services will increase by 4.5% and 12.1% respectively, green jobs in agriculture, fishing and mining industries will decrease by 3.4%.

Green Jobs Prospects by Skill Level


Green jobs that require middle level of skills will increase at the highest rate (11.0%), whereas green jobs that require basic level will increase only 6.1%. On the contrary, green related jobs with middle level of skills will increase at the lowest rate (3.4%), and increase rate for green related jobs with advanced level of skills will be the highest rate (6.5%). Further breakdown of prospects by industry and skill level reveals that the decrease of green jobs in agriculture, fishing and mining is mainly due to a decrease of jobs with basic level of skills. Therefore, education and training strategies for agriculture, fishing and mining should particularly address on upgrading skill levels of employees in this sector.

Polytechnical college
Restructuring curricula of Korea Polytechnic Colleges to meet the nee ds of middle level technicians is example of skills response of greening occupations. Since 2008, Korea polytechnic college went through maj or curricula restructuring to response to the recent green growth initia tives and new growth engine industries.

Since one of the main objectives of the polytechnical colle ges is to provide ready-to-work technicians and technologi sts upon the demands of local labor markets, the needs as sessment of the local labor market must be critical. After revising the curricula, the overall application rate for the polytechnical colleges increased by 30 per cent.
