Managing the Transition to the Private Cloud

Traditional IT
App MW OS HW App MW OS HW App MW OS HW

Traditionally, Operations Management has been focused on infrastructure and application silos. Every application required its own hardware, OS, middleware and application stack. Each silo is very complex, and difficult to manage, requiring specialized skills. The more applications you have, the more specialized teams youll need. Applications live and die with the hardware or the next refresh cycle. On the other hand, the cost of these application is relatively easy to capture depending on who owns the hardware and software licenses.

As we move to a Private Cloud, virtualization reduces infrastructure costs through server consolidation. But it also blurs the lines of ownership and financial responsibility by introducing new abstraction layers: Resource Pools, Datastores and VLANs. It is now much easier to provide standardized system configurations, such as Windows and Linux VM templates or a complete LAMP stack for rapid provisioning. These templates are used to build more complex virtualized applications (vApps). As SaaS applications like SalesForce.com and Infrastructure as a Service offerings become more viable, some of these VMs could run at a service provider but they still need to be managed consistently and integrated with the datacenter, for example, to provide authentication against AD.

A Private Cloud architecture enables you to become more like an IT service provider, and over time, end users will be asking for more applications and higher Quality of Service (QoS), They will also benchmark corporate IT against application service provides like Google, Facebook and Yahoo. End users are now used to and expect applications to be available anywhere, anytime and with very little (if any) downtime. The impact on IT is that well need to figure out how to manage more VMs and a higher rate of change with the same number of people as headcounts and infrastructure budgets are most likely not going to increase.

Manage SLAs

When transitioning to the Private Cloud, we must focus on three questions: 1. How can we optimize resource utilization and become more efficient?

2. How can we automate tasks to get more done in the same amount of time?
3. How can we better manage service levels of VMs and applications? Lets start with the first topic and talk about how to optimize resources.

But then you should focus on Capacity Higher QoS Management. Because VMs run on shared OS DB AD infrastructure, youll need to understand your consumption trends so you can forecastMore VMs future VM Resource Pool | Datastore | VLAN capacity needs and avoid shortfalls. More Change Ongoing capacity management is also important to right size VMs. You want to avoid a situation where over-provisioned physical servers SLAs Automate Tasks Manage become over-provisioned VMs during P2V. In fact, we hear from customers that have 90% of their VMs are over-provisioned which really limits your consolidation ratios.

Once youve right-sized your VMs you should look at your distribution of VM configurations to determine what your templates for app server, database, etc VMs should look like. Automate Tasks Manage SLAs Standardization is really what drives higher VM per admin ratios and we have customers reporting that they can only manage more than 800 VMs per admin only because theyve rigorously standardized their VM configurations instead of build to order VMs. Bottom line, optimizing your resources this way gives you a good foundation efficiency and scale.

Lets talk about automation. I think youll agree that weve solved the provisioning Managing the Transition to the Private Cloud problem and the new challenge is how to deliver VMs faster but at the same time enforce IT control?

In simple terms, the IT supply chain typically looks like this: Youve got VI admins, application owners and DBAs and end users.
VI Admins package physical resources and deliver them as VMs to DBAs and application owners. On these VMs App owners deploy applications to the end user. Service level agreements, implicit or not, exist between every supplier and consumer every step of the way.
