CIVIL AVIATION IN INDIA

The history of civil aviation in India started with its first commercial flight on February 18, 1911. It was a journey from Allahabad to Naini. Nationalization of Indian Airlines (IA) in 1953 brought the domestic civil aviation sector under the purview of Indian Government.

The Open-sky policy came in April 1990. The policy allowed

air taxi- operators to operate flights from any airport, both on a charter and a non charter basis and to decide their own flight schedules, cargo and passenger fares.

Kingfisher Airlines is a United Breweries Group company. Kingfisher operates only domestic routes operating 218 flights a day and a network of 38 destinations.

They have not positioned themselves merely into the business of transporting people from point A to point B, but have positioned themselves as a part of Aviation Hospitality by making service and quality their main focus.

Kingfisher Airlines is the only 5 Star certified airline in India

and its the only domestic airline in the world to receive a 5

Star rating.

Railways are the cheapest mode of transport for traveling from one state to another. They are highly serviceable for both the passengers as well as for carrying goods. Railways have been divided into zones for better management and functionality. Indian Railways is the largest railway system in the world to be functioning under a single management. The most cost efficient mode of transport, Indian Railways enjoy preference over other public transport systems. With thousands of railway stations across the country, superior safety standards, lower environmental hazard and relatively low train fare, Indian Railways is the first choice for transfer goods and commodities.

Passenger locomotives:

Historically very important locomotives as these are the very first electric loco to be used in India. The first locomotive was named as Sir Roger Lumney and is currently preserved in the National Rail Museum.

Track and gauge:

Indian railways uses four gauges, the 1,676mm broad gauge which is wider than the 1,435mm standard gauge; the 1,000mm metre gauge; and two narrow gauges, 762 mm (2 ft 6 in) and 610 mm (2 ft) . Track sections are rated for speeds ranging from 75 to 160 km/h.

Into the tool room:

IR had a fixed price policy, irrespective of demand scenario and competition.

A Dynamic Pricing Policy was introduced for freight as well as passenger, for peak and non-peak seasons, premium and non-premium services, for busy and non-busy routes. As per this policy the rates for non-peak season, on-premium service and empty owe directions would be less than the general rates and the rates for peak season and premium services could be higher than normal. The price points should be significantly lesser than the low cost airlines. To achieve this, it has to adopt every avenue of cost reduction feasible.
