The Keyboard

A text based input device that is used to type in letters,
numbers and other characters.
Keyboard Ports :- This is connected to the CPU.

Keyboards are available in three styles:

 Standard keyboard with 83 – 84 keys

 Enhanced keyboard with 101 keys or more

 Windows keyboard with 104 keys

Numeric keys
 These are the keys on the second row of the keyboard
having digits from 0 to 9 and are used for entering
numbers

 Some keys of the numeric key pad on the right hand


side of the keyboard have double functions

 For example: the key marked 9, also has PgUp written


on it

Alphabetic Keys

 These are represented by 3rd, 4th and 5th rows having


alphabets from A to Z

Function Keys
 These are identified as F1 through F12 on the topmost row
of the keyboard
 The function of these keys is software dependent i.e. they
acquire different functions depending on the software
package which is being used at the times
 For instance, you use F3 to repeat the last DOS command
you typed
 These are also called soft keys as functions can be
changed

Cursor Control Keys ( Arrow Keys)

 These are the four arrow on the right hand


side of the keyboard
 They move the cursor on the monitor in the
desired direction (left, right, up or down)

There are four other Control keys labeled as


 End
 Home
 Pg Up
 and Pg Dn

Cursor Control Keys
 Pg Up (Page Up) key:- is used to move the cursor to the
pervious screen or page of the document

 Pg Dn (Page Down) key is used to move the cursor to the


next screen or page

 Home key is used to bring the cursor to the beginning of the


line or to the top of the document

 End key is used to position the cursor at the end of the line
or document

Caps Lock Key:-
 When Caps Lock in ON, any letter you type will appear
in uppercase. When Caps Lock is pressed again, the
letter is shown in the lower-case

Scroll Lock:-
 It stops screen contents (output) rolling on an MF
(multi-functional) keyboard, it has no function under
MS-DOS

The shift keys
 These Three keys- are known as shift keys

 Ctrl,
 Shift,
 Alt

The shift keys

 These keys in combination with other keys can be


allotted different functions by different software

 For example: MSWORD allotted ‘copy’ function to


“CTRL+c”

Shift key

 Normally, when an alphabet is typed, it is shown in the


lower case

 Holding down Shift key and then pressing an alphabet key


causes it to appear in uppercase (capital)

Enter/Return
 The Enter key is used for two main purposes

 Alerts COMPUTER to execute the given


instruction

 when using a word processor, pressing Enter key


begins a new paragraph or a new line

 Enter key is also referred to as Return key

Pause :-
 Typing DIR and then pressing Enter key, displays all the
files stored in the diskette
 If you are not in a position to read all the files, press Pause
key

Tab

 It is used to make the cursor jump across the screen


form one set ‘tab-stop’ to another, from column to
column

ESC KEY
 In most applications, you can use this key to
cancel a command you have just entered or in some
cases it invokes a menu of option.

Print Screen :-

 If this key is pressed, the displayed screen gets printed


on the printer

Delete KEY

 Normally this key is alloted the function of deletion of a


text or a file

Backspace:-

 Pressing Backspace ( ) key erases any


character to the left of the cursor

Insert
 It allows insertion of characters to the left of the cursor.
This is a toggle key. Pressing once brings the insert
mode “ON” and pressing again will toggle it “OFF”

Spacebar:-

 Pressing Spacebar key prints one blank space at a


time. It can be allotted any function by software
