Effective problem solving TYPE B Read through the problem carefully : - translate the problem from English to mathematics . This process is called mathematical modeling Identify what you want (unknown(s)) and what you have (known(s)) You may require to draw a diagram to get clear understanding of the problem Introduce a suitable formula or mathematical notation to relate what you want and what you have this will be your mathematical model The problem may require you to do some sort of physical interpretation of your result . Why need assignments? Worth anything from 5-20% of the final course grade Tell you where you should concentrate your practice Identify problems that best illustrate key concepts to enhance understanding Identify problems similar to those that may be asked on tests
