Conflict is a clash between contradictory impulses within an individual or between groups of people Conflict can have constructive or destructive consequences It is important to know strategies for positive or constructive resolution

Levels of Conflict
Level I-Intrapersonal conflict, takes place within an individual Level II-Interpersonal conflict, takes place between individuals (coworkers, team members) Level III-Intra-group conflict, takes place between groups in the same organization or command

Negative factors of conflict: being closed minded, no compromise, having his or her own way, someone will win and someone will lose

Positive factors of conflict: opportunity to explore and resolve differences, avoid negative factors cited above, work towards a win-win situation

Methods for Managing Conflict


Denial or Avoidance Supression: go along to get along, dont rock the boat, we run a happy ship Power or dominance (usually results in win-lose) 3RD Party intervention: the mediator is trusted and respected, the decision will be accepted, mediator is an expert and competent in resolving the issue Compromise or Negotiation: each party gives in Integration or Collaboration: find an acceptable solution thru group problem solving

Ethics are principles or standards that guide us to do the moral or right thing and inspires the sense of purpose to serve the country
