RACISM

By: Pamela Ramos, Sabrina Hernando, Miguel Snchez.

Racism: prejudice that members of one race are superior to members of other races.

Xenophobia: is a dislike and/or fear of what is unknown or different from oneself.

Racism in the United States has been a major issue ever since the colonial era and the slave era. Legally sanctioned inequality imposed a heavy burden on Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans and Mexican Americans. White Americans were privileged by law in matters of literacy, immigration, voting rights, citizenship, and criminal procedure over periods of time extending from the 17th century to the 1960s.

Many European ethnic groups, particularly American Jews, Irish Americans, and Eastern European and Southern European immigrants, as well as immigrants from elsewhere, suffered xenophobic exclusion and other forms of racism in American society.

Racism in USA

Racism in the Present Day

Racism in present-day American can perhaps best be demonstrated through the case of HispanicAmericans. Racism towards this group has existed for years, but historically it has remained out of the national spotlight. The southwest part of the United States, in particular, has witnessed virulent racism towards Latinos for years. It is estimated that hundreds of Mexican were lynched in the United States between 1847 and 1935. Presently, the Hispanic population of the United States is the fastest growing, yet least upwardly mobile ethnic group in our nation (Perry & Perry, 2006, p.202)Recently, this problem has been compounded by politicians who have politicized the issue of Hispanic immigration. The reasons behind this, an unpopular war, a sagging economy, and terrorist threats on our nation, have little or nothing to do with Hispanic-Americans. While the leaders who are politicizing this issue may intend it to distract voters from the more distressing

Underneath all of this political bluster about secure borders and American jobs is a message of racial separatism. Illegal immigration is certainly a problem, the current political rhetoric is creating an "us versus them" mentality in which Hispanics, regardless if they are legal or illegal immigrants, or suffering. Perhaps the most disturbing aspect of this situation is that the people behind this are not radicals or extremists, they are

Hate Crimes: Murders caused by racist people in the USA

Four suspects were detained and faced hate crime and attempted murder charges. On January 20, 2008, in Omaha, Nebraska, Brittany Williams, a 21-year-old African American college student, was shot to death at a local drive-in. Prosecutors noted that the murderers own words and the circumstances of the shootingpoint to the [murder] as being race-based. In June 2008, in Eugene, Oregon, three young white men attacked a 59-year-old African-American man, beating him with a baseball bat. According to police reports, the victim suffered facial, jaw and skull injuries requiring extensive surgeries. The incident was investigated as a hate crime. In Seattle, Washington, in March 2008, two white men yelling racial slurs attacked a 24-year-old black man at a bus stop. Police announced two arrests on charges of second-degree assault, firstdegree robbery, and malicious harassment (the latter is based on Washingtons hate crime law).

Our Opinion
We think that racism should not exist, because it makes people discriminate each other just because of their race or way to think. We are against racism because no matter the skin color, religion, beliefs, we are all
