Computers for Pupils is an initiative to put computers and access to the internet into the homes of pupils who lack them – giving them the same access opportunities as their peers. It’s funded for KS3 and KS4 pupils who live in the 10% most deprived areas in England. This is defined by Index of Multiple Deprivation (2004) and who are eligible for free school meals. It’s an opportunity to maximise the impact on teaching and learning for our most disadvantaged pupils. What’s this initiative about? Research shows that pupils’ use of ICT at home as well as school: Raises standards and increases motivation Supports personalisation Improves their ICT skills Provides more options for what they learn and how they learn it Supports homework and revision How is the funding allocated? Funding is being made available to LAs and schools as part of SF 125 (revenue, connectivity) and 210 (capital, equipment) respectively Funding has been allocated to LAs by formula LAs need to agree with their schools how it should be distributed Liverpool has funding for TWO years 06-07 - £271K (125) and £1,207,200 (210) 07-08 - £271K (125) and £1,207,200 (210) funding continued… The formula assumes that 30% of the targeted pupils in deprived areas already have access to ICT at home For maximum impact, the formula also specifies a threshold of a minimum number of eligible pupils at school level – this has been set at 30 pupils Funding allocated is a fixed amount of £10k per notional school, plus a per-pupil amount for schools with a minimum of eligible pupils What the funding is for Equipment + Connectivity All equipment purchased under this initiative is the property of the school. Expectation is that equipment is for the home as long as the eligible pupil remains in the school. Connectivity is for ONE year ONLY. In the event of loss or theft the school is not obliged to replace the equipment. Liverpool Data 5311 eligible notional pupils according to DfES statistics There is not enough money to fund all of these pupils (based on notional equipment and connectivity costs of £1200* per pupil) We need eligible schools to identify the pupils (obviously in a sensitive manner) * £800 “device” + £400 connectivity – this is data provided by the National Computing Centre (it is a “ball-park” illustration only) Choices
