SPLIT CYCLE ENGINES

ABSTRACT

SPLITTING THE FOUR STROKES OF AN IC ENGINE. THE SPLITTING IS DONE BY USING TWO CYLINDERS. A COLD CYLINDER FOR SUCTION AND COMPRESSION AND A HOT CYLINDER FOR POWER AND EXHAUST. IMPROVES EFFICIENCY AND 4/19/12 REDUCES EMMISSIONS.

Introduction
The need of the day is better transport systems, Ones which have better efficiencies without compromising the power and torque which we have gotten accustomed to with our petrol and diesel engines. Electric cars though economical are not as clean as they are thought to be. Most of our electric power comes from burning coal and running cars from the electric grid will 4/19/12 cause result in indirect pollution.

Many feel that the end of the IC engines is near. But the internal combustion engines still have a little bit of fight left in them.

Before we shift to alternate fuels and hybrid vehicles we should realise that in todays IC engines only 30% of the fuels potential is utilised.

The remaining gets dissipated in compression strokes, friction, cams and other compromises .The process also generates a lot of pollutants.

This presentation deals with one method of reducing the energy loss during the compression stroke by separating the four strokes of the engine.

The four stages in the Ottos cycle include

WORKING OF AN IC ENGINE

Adiabatic expansion Constant volume heat rejection Adiabatic compression Constant volume heat addition

And the four strokes include

4/19/12

The power stroke is the only stroke which produces the power for the other 3 strokes.

This implies that the power is produced once for every 720 deg rotation of the 4/19/12 crankshaft

The net energy produced by the engine is the energy generated during the power stroke minus the amount of energy consumed by the compression stroke.

But it is necessary as the efficiency without compressing the working fluid would be less than 12%.

So in order to improve the efficiency of the engine we need to spend less power to compress the air and also to increase the compression ratio.
4/19/12

The basic formula for the air standard efficiency of an Otto cycle is

otto= 1-1/ (R)-1

A Leap Improvement in Efficiency. Can reach up to 50%. Splitting the cycle allows flexibility in the design and thermal management. One combustion cycle per crankshaft revolution. Increased power.

PROTOTYPES

There are quite a few prototypes of the split cycle engine. The two most successful ones are the Scuderi engine developed by the Scuderi group and the Tour engine designed by the Tour engine Inc.

4/19/12

THE SCUDERI ENGINE

The scuderi engine claims to reduce NOx emissions up to 80 percent and improve fuel efficiency by 50 percent, compared to a conventional gasoline engines In a normal engine, firing after top dead centre doesn't work, because the piston will outrun the 4/19/12 flame, so we can't build up

THE TOUR ENGINE.

The tour engine has a opposite cylinder design which has the advantage of easier thermal management and has a less complex system for the transfer of the compressed air fuel mixture.

OUR IDEAS
Installing an air compressing unit to the brakes instead of a battery recharging unit. This compressed air can be stored in a cylinder that also supplies air to the engine. This would reduce the energy losses during braking and thus increase efficiency.

In diesel engines using the split cycle we can use two turbo chargers instead of one. A smaller turbo charger during the initial stages and using its output to run a bigger one. This ensures that there is no turbo lag 4/19/12 and hence we will get a very linear power
