The company was incorporated as Western India Vegetable Products Ltd in the year 1945.
Sri. Azim Premji is the chairman of Wipro Group who took the charge in the year 1966. The Company Manufactured FMCG Goods. In the year 1977, the Company changed to Wipro Products Ltd. It was again changed to Wipro Ltd., in the year 1984. 1983 It undertook to establish manufacturing facilities at Tumkur, for the manufacturing of hydraulic tipping systems.

1988 The company diversified the product line into heavy duty industrial cylinders and mobile hydraulic cylinders. 1989 - The Company set up a joint venture company with General Electric of U.S.A. for the manufacture, sale and service of diagnostic and imaging products. 1990 The joint venture with Elpro International Ltd to manufacture X-ray machines became a subsidiary of the Company. 1993 WIPRO launches Hair care products. 1995 Installs 2nd Manufacturing plant for X-ray components.

2001 - Wipro became the first software technology and services company in India to be certified for ISO 14001 certification for complying with the international standards for Environmental Management System (EMS)
