The evolution of the Indias most trusted brand...

` ` ` `

Bajaj Group was founded in 1926, at the height of India's movement for independence from the British. Jamnalal Bajaj, founder of the group, was a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi. Jamnalal Bajaj's close involvement in the freedom movement did not leave him with much time for his business. In 1942, his son Kamalnayan Bajaj took charge of the business. He consolidated the group and diversified into various manufacturing activities. Rahul Bajaj, the present Chairman and Managing Director of the group took reins of the business in 1965. Under his leadership the group has achieved new heights and ranks among the top 10 business houses in India.

Jamanalal dedicated much of his wealth to the poor. He felt this inherited wealth was a sacred trust to be used for the benefit of the people. This was in line with the trusteeship concept proposed by Gandhi. As per Gandhis suggestion, Jamnalal spent his last days attending to cattle also known as Goseva. His activities included bathing them, sweeping the floor clean, feeding them, milking and other duties. Jamanalal Bajaj was interested in initiatives such as the removal of untouchability, promotion of Hindi, and Khadi and village Industries. He had toured across the country promoting Khadi.

With the intent of eradicating untouchability, he fought the non admission of Harijans into Hindu temples in his home town of Wardha. As orthodox Hindu priests and Brahmins objected, he opened his own family temple, the Laxmi Narayan Mandir, in Wardha, for the Harijans in 1928. He began a campaign by eating a meal with Harijans and opening public wells to them. He opened several wells in his fields and gardens. He was impressed by the Ashrams routine of prayer and physical work. Activities included cleaning, cooking, washing and looking after the domesticated animals. More often that not, such impressions will be proven wrong." This quote is reproduced from 'leading the way' an article by mr. Shekhar bajaj in the corporate dossier of economic times on january 14th, 2005 HE SAID: we at bajaj have a strong belief that given the right kind of inspiration, excitement and motivation that reaches the hearts and souls of people, ordinary people can perform extraordinarily. This is the core of our work culture.
