What is fourth generation (4G) mobile systems?

Fourth generation mobile communications systems that are

characterized by high-speed data rates ranging from 20 to 100 Mbps, suitable for high-resolution movies and television.
4G is not one defined technology or standard, but rather a

collection of technologies and protocols aimed at creating fully packet-switched networks optimized for data.

Generations Timeline

1G-First Generation
y Uses frequency division multiple access (FDMA) to

communicate (every call in one area uses its own set of channels for communication)
y World s first operational cellular system y No support for wireless data
4

1G Services
y Standard voice y No data services y No supplementary services

1G (Disadvantages)
A series of incompatible networks Limited support for roaming Poor security No support for wireless data No third party applications

2G-Second Generation
y Uses digital encoding and includes CDMA, TDMA and GSM.

Text messages can be sent on 2G networks, but more bandwidth hungry applications require 2.5G.

y Data Rates upto 9.6 to 64kbps y Digital techniques rather than analogue y Increased quality of service y Possibility of wireless data services

2G Services
Improved standard telephony (speech) Basic wireless data Additional services(call barring etc.) Depends on

Network standard Operator policies

2G (Disadvantages)
y Low data Bandwidth y No audio/video y No collaborative services y No Location Services

3G- Third Generation

y 3G networks promise next-generation service with

transmission rates of 144kbps to 2Mbps and higher that can support multimedia applications, such as video, video conferencing and Internet access. Both UMTS (WCDMA) and EDGE will support 3G services.

y 3G networks operate on a different frequency than 2G

networks.

3G Services
2MHz video conferencing telemedicine Video on demand electronic newspaper Mobile TV Internet Bandwidth audio conferencing radio paging

messaging

Mobile radio

Fax voice 1KHz bi directional unidirectional Broadcast/ multicast

3G(Disadvantages)
Low Data Rates Speed Transmission Delay High Cost of 3G cellular phones 3G can only enjoy video conferencing only with other 3G subscribers.

4G-Fourth Generation
y 4G = 4th Generation mobile communications y 4G = B3G = Beyond 3rd Generation (UMTS, IMT-

2000) mobile communications

y Foreseen to become available after 2010. y 2 major goals: broadband for all, access everywhere y Data rates speed upto 100Mbps

4G Possibilities
Personal Media Repository
y Create a personal media

repository that can be accessed from home and on the road to view photos, watch movies and listen to your personal music collection.

Comparison

ossible Applications
y Virtual Presence: 4G system gives mobile users a "virtual

presence" (for example, always-on connections to keep people on event).

y Tele-medicine: 4G will support remote health monitoring of

patients.

y Tele-geoprocessing: Queries dependent on location

information of several users, in addition to temporal aspects have many applications.

y Education

Continued
y Broadband Access in Remote

Location
y 4G networks will provide a wireless

alternative for broadband access to residential and business customers. y In addition, 4G will provide the first opportunity for broadband access in remote locations without an infrastructure to support cable or DSL access.

Challenges & needs

y Lower price poi ts only slig tly ig er t an alternatives y More coor ination among spectr m reg lators around t e

world y More academic researc y Standardization of wireless networks in terms of modulation tec niques, switc ing sc emes and roaming is an a solute necessity for 4G y A voice-independent usiness justification t inking y Integration across different network topologies
