What are vertical markets?

• Vertical markets as defined by Wikipedia,

the free encyclopedia:

A vertical market (often referred to simply as a "vertical") is a

group of similar businesses and customers that engage in trade based
on specific and specialized needs.
Often, participants in a vertical market are very limited to a subset of a
larger industry (a niche market)

18
WiMAX – ideal for Vertical Markets (“Verticals”)

• Verticals depend on the support of their communications technologies to:

– Successfully carry out day-to-day operations
– Support a mobile staff
– Serve the public
• WiMAX is perfectly matching the needs of verticals
– Delivers data, voice and video applications
– Is reliable
– Is secure
– Supports fixed / nomadic applications (fixed WiMAX, mobile WiMAX)
– Provides solutions for mobile applications (mobile WiMAX)
– Is standard (therefore verticals have more flexibility and confidence when
selecting a solution)
– Provides higher data rates than old legacy systems – meeting the
increasing need for higher bandwidth 19
Why WiMAX and not Other Wireless Technologies

• Legacy systems have been used by Verticals

– WiMAX provides the benefits of a Standard Technology
– WiMAX provides many advantages including:
• High data rate for new applications that are hungry for bandwidth
• High data rate for increasing numbers of end devices (even meters with
small BW requirement per meter accumulate to high data rates)
• Built in QoS for Data, Video over IP and Voice over IP applications
• GPRS has been used by Verticals
– General packet radio service (GPRS) is a packet oriented mobile data service
available to users of the 2G cellular communication systems
– GPRS data rates are 56-114 kbit/s compared to dozens of Mbps supported by
WiMAX
• Satellite solutions are expensive and suffer from high latency
20
Why WiMAX and not WiFi

WiMAX WiFi
Designed for Wireless Access Designed for Wireless LAN
Maintains fixed data rates even when number Data rate level dramatically decreases when the
of CPEs gets higher number of CPEs gets higher (due to collisions
between CPEs) – see graph in the next slide
Service Level can be maintained Service Level cannot be maintained
for each CPE for each CPE
Built in QoS for Video, Voice and Data QoS is not built in the protocol
Defined for licensed Defined for unlicensed bands only
and unlicensed bands (Using it in licensed bands is in fact proprietary)
Available in many bands: 700MHz to 5.x GHz Available mainly in 2.4, 4.9 and 5.x GHz

Airspan’s large variety of Frequency Bands: ideal for Verticals

Verticals often own special frequency bands

• Airspan’s WiMAX solution supports a wide variety of bands
– 700MHz to 5.95 GHz
– TDD and FDD
– Licensed and unlicensed
• Chevron: using HiperMAX and 16d CPEs in 700MHz and 3.65 GHz
• GE is using our MicroMAX and MRTs in 5.4 GHz TDD (unlicensed band)
• MicroMAX 1.4/1.5 GHz is ideal for the Utility market
• HiperMAX, MicroMAX and CPEs in 4.9 GHz are ideal for Public Safety
applications
– In the USA, Asia and in the Middle East
– MicroMAX 4.9 project used in Pakistan for CCTV is an example

23
Airspan - ideal for Verticals: Small Spectrum Allocations

Verticals sometimes own small chunks of spectrum

• Airspan’s fixed WiMAX solution supports almost every channel size,
including small channels:
– 1.5 MHz, 1.75MHz, 2.5MHz, 2.75MHz, 3 MHz, 3.5 MHz, 5MHz, 7 MHz, 10MHz
– Other channel sizes may be added when needed
• Airspan’s mobile WiMAX solution supports a wide variety of channel sizes
– 3.5MHz, 5MHz, 7MHz, 10MHz, 2*7MHz, 2*10MHz
• Utility market in 1.4/1.5 GHz has very narrow channel allocations
– MicroMAX 1.4/1.5 supports 1.5 MHz channels

24
Airspan’s Compact and Pico Base Stations: ideal for Verticals

• Verticals (unlike large operators) often do not have the facilities to install a
multi-sector split-architecture Base Station
• Verticals often have small number of CPEs per site therefore prefer a BS
optimized for single-sector use
• MacroMAXe is a compact Base Station – ideal for Verticals
– Optimized single sector solution (or three-sector solution)
– All-in-one all-outdoor; 2*37 dBm / 2*40 dBm and 4Rx; 16e
– No need for any indoor unit, no need for shelter and/or air conditioning
– Romania: using MacroMAXe 3.65 GHz for Border Control
– Austria: using MacroMAXe 3.45 GHz for Monitoring and Control of Transformers and for
Meter Reading
• MicroMAX is in fact a Pico Base Station – ideal for Verticals
– Optimized single sector solution (or multiple sector solution)
– Mainly outdoor (small indoor unit feeding it); 27 dBm / 22 dBm; 16d
25
Airspan’s Customized MRT: designed for Verticals

• Airspan’s new MRT is a customized product – ideal for verticals

– Ruggedized fixed WiMAX (16d) terminal
– Supports nomadic and fixed applications
• Channel table
• Netspan supports nomadic applications
– Ideal for vehicular applications which are common among verticals
– Was designed for verticals, such as transportation
– Is being used by GE
– Is available in licensed and unlicensed bands from 700MHz to 5.95 GHz
– Has built in WiFi Access Point

26
Airspan’s Robust Solutions: ideal for Verticals

• The majority of Airspan’s outdoor devices meet IP66 environmental standard

• Airspan’s outdoor devices meet temperatures of -40° Celsius to 55° Celsius
• MicroMAX and MacroMAXe Base Stations as well as HiperMAX’s outdoor
radios have a very robust design
• ProST and MiMAX-Pro outdoor CPEs have a robust design

MacroMAXe Base Station: Robust Design

27
Airspan - ideal for Verticals: Power Feeding Options

• Verticals often need special power feeding such as:

– DC input power for CPEs
– All-outdoor power solution

• Airspan has a variety of CPEs and various power solutions for CPEs such as:
– SDA which powers the outdoor ProST comes as AC or DC variant
– There is an “outdoor PSU” that can power the outdoor ProST-WiFi
– MiMAX-Pro is powered from standard PoE
– ProST needs simply power on some pins and Ethernet connectivity on other pins

28
Airspan’s architecture is very useful for Verticals

• Unlike large operators, Verticals sometimes would prefer avoid the use of
core network servers such as the ASN GW and “fancy AAA servers”
– May prefer to use the fixed budget to buy additional radio equipment…

• Airspan’s 16d solutions do not need such servers

– CPEs have built-in public and private keys from Verisign for CPE authentication

• Airspan’s 16e solutions support a special “Stand Alone” mode for fixed
application
– No need for ASN GW
– Free Radius as AAA solution – planned for release 9.5

29
Airspan’s VLAN support is very useful for Verticals

• Verticals often use Ethernet services such as VLANs

• Airspan’s 16d solutions supports VLAN tagging and VLAN pass-through

– Including VLAN-in-VLAN and multiple VLANs per SS

• Airspan’s 16e solutions support Ethernet CS – although it is only an “option”

in 16e
– VLAN pass through is supported and is being used by verticals in Romania and in
Austria
• Support multiple VLANs per MS (unlike competition)
– VLAN tagging is planned for release 9.5

30
Airspan’s Scheduler is ideal for Verticals

• Verticals may have different DL/UL needs:

– DL>UL
– DL=UL for symmetrical applications
– DL<UL for applications like CCTV or Meter Reading
• Airspan’s 16d can be configured with any DL/UL ratio
– Such as DL=80%, DL=UL=50% or UL=80% (for CCTV application)
– Also supports “dynamic allocation” which provides the best use of the spectrum in “island
installation” of a single sector that does not have to be synchronized
• Airspan’s 16e strengthens the UL
– As 16e by nature has much weaker UL than DL
– MacroMAXe: 4Rx to strengthen the UL
– MacroMAXe and HiperMAX: 64QAM uplink (which is only optional in 16e)
– UL MIMO is part of the roadmap too

31
Airspan supports Extended Ranges – ideal for Verticals

• Verticals sometimes need long ranges, of dozens of KM

– Military application is one example for that
• Airspan’s 16d supports up to 50KM
– MicroMAX and HiperMAX were installed at ranges of 20,30, and even 50KM
– Airspan’s Base Stations and CPEs allow the use of high gain external antennas when needed
• Airspan’s 16e is better than “standard 16e”
– “Standard 16e has range limitations (about 8KM in 10 and 5 MHz channels, for example)
– Airspan has modified its Software Defined Radio in MacroMAXe and HiperMAX and can
support more than 37KM at channel size of 10 or 5MHz and more than 50KM in other channel
sizes
– MacroMAXe Border Control installations in Romania are in ranges longer than standard 16e
max range
