GREECE AND ROME:

POINT OF VIEW

By: Isabella De La Rosa

PRIMARY GREECE
This quote is from Pericles, who lived in Athens, Greece from
495 – 429 BCE, he was very wealthy.

Pericles: quote on Athenian love of beauty

"Our love of what is beautiful does not lead to extravagance; our
love of the things of the mind does not make us soft."

Point of View: Pericles believes that (Athenians) love of beauty

doesn’t lead to more material objects or that intelligence means
they are weak.
PRIMARY ROME
This quote is from Cicero, who lived in Rome from 106– 43
BCE, he was wealthy.

Cicero: quote on law and the good of the people

"Salus populi suprema est lex. (The good of the people is the
highest law.)"

Point of View: Cicero believes that the good of the people is the
highest law because without the people there wouldn't be a need
of the law.
PRIMARY GREECE
This is a quote from Lysander, who lived in Sparta till 395
BCE, he was a Spartan general.

Lysander: quote on fooling people

"Deceive boys with toys, but men with oaths."

Point of View: Lysander believes that you trick boys with toys
and men with oaths because once a man takes an oath he must
honor it even if he doesn’t fully understand what the oaths
represents.
PRIMARY ROME
This is a quote from Augustus, a.k.a Caesar Augustus, who
lived in Rome from 63 BCE- 14 AD, he was Rome’s first
emperor.

Augustus: quote on rebuilding Rome

"I found Rome a city of bricks and left it a city of marble."

Point of View: Caesar Augustus believes that he saw Rome as

rubble when he first saw it but when he left it, it was marble
because after he came to power he made Rome strong and the
best it could be.
PRIMARY GREECE
This quote was from Protagoras of Abderra who lived in Greece
from 490– 420 BCE. He was a philosopher.

Protagoras of Abderra: quote on the existence of the gods

"Concerning the gods, I have no means of knowing whether they exist
or not or of what sort they may be. Many things prevent knowledge
including the obscurity of the subject and the brevity of human life."

Point of View: Protagoras believes that no one can really know if the
gods exist because it is such an obscure subject and life is too short to
know.
PRIMARY ROME
This quote was from Petronius, who lived in Rome from 27–66
AD. He was a satirical novelist.

Petronius: quote on gullibility

"A man who is always ready to believe what is told him will never
do well."

Point of View: Petronius believes that a gullible man won’t ever

do well because he will believe anything anyone says and that
could lead to trouble.

Theater of Dionysus in Athens,

CE.

SECONDARY GREECE
Achilles
In Greek mythology, Achilles was one of the leading Greek warriors of the Trojan
War and the slayer of the Trojan champion Hector. He is also the literary hero
of Homer's Iliad, the ninth- or eighth-century B.C. epic account of the siege of Troy.
Achilles was the only mortal son of Peleus, king of the Myrmidons in Thessaly, and
the Nereid (sea nymph)Thetis. When Achilles was first born, his mother prepared to
make him immortal by dipping him into the River Styx, one of the five rivers of the
Underworld. The heel by which she held Achilles did not come into contact with the
waters of the River Styx, however, and was therefore left vulnerable. That story gave
rise to an adage still used today to refer to a point of vulnerability: the "Achilles' heel."

Point of View: The Greeks believed that Achilles was a leading Greek
warrior in the Trojan War because they thought of him as a hero and
they have tales of his victories and his ultimate defeat.
SECONDARY ROME
Bellona

In Roman religion, Bellona was the goddess of war. She was possibly
the sister, wife, or daughter of Mars, the Roman god of war. Bellona
may have been, in origin, an Asian goddess of war who was
worshipped in the ancient regions of Cappadocia and Phrygia in
Asia Minor. Her adoption into the Roman pantheon was made under
the patronage of the dictator Lucius Cornelius Sulla. Bellona's
temple was located outside the city gates of Rome in the Campus
Martius.

Point of View: The Romans believed that Bellona was the goddess of
war because they had a belief system and she was inducted into it
through Lucius Cornelius Sulla.
