Definition
• When people interact in assertive or nonassertive
ways, there is a social transaction in which one
person responds to another. The study of these
social transactions between people is called
transactional analysis (T.A.)

• Two people interact each other from one of three
psychological positions, known as ego states.


• Ego states are:

▫ Parent (P)
▫ Adult (A)
▫ Child (C)
▫
• Each person can operate from any of the three.



The Parent Ego State:
• People act like domineering parents.

• Individual may be either overtly protective and

loving or stern and critical.

• Prescribing standards and rules for others

• Treat other persons like children

•
The Adult Ego State:
• Person acts like a matured adult.

• Attacking problems in a cool-headed rational

manner

• Gathers relevant information, critically

analyses them, generates alternatives and
makes logical choices.

The Child Ego State
• The person behaves in an immature and childlike
manner
•
• Reflects the emotions developed in response to
childhood experiences.

• Desires approval from others and prefers

immediate rewards.

Types of Transactions

Complementary Transactions
• The ego states of the sender and receiver in the opening
transaction are simply reversed in the response.
