Haskell Indian ations University is an
erican Indian boarding school that currently
educates Indian students fro federally
recognized tribes in the United tates. Haskell
in existence for 120 years is the oldest and
longest established intertribal university in the
country. The school for ost of its existence
has enrolled ore than 1000 students per
seester soe directly out of high school and
any as non-traditional students.
Haskell¶s history has been the subject of
any publications including segents in books
and on the internet. The school also possesses
one of the ost inspired and interesting
histories of all educational institutes. |

these sources to provide a virtual exhibit tour of
parts of Haskell¶s history.
Initially y intention was to provide a
historical record of the Haskell Cultural Center
and useus opening dedication exhibit.
Fro there²the project which is a work in
progress grew to include various aspects of
Haskell history.
This project grew out of y personal
involveent knowledge and feelings about
Haskell. I graduated fro Haskell in 2001 with
an ssociate of rts degree in Liberal rts and
in 2002 with a Bachelor of rts degree in
erican Indian tudies. s a student at
Haskell I was actively involved in the university
archives and useu collections. This
experience ade e aware of the iportance
of Indian people preserving and interpreting
their own histories.
The aterial is divided into the following
sections: Introduction; History; The ³Firsts´;
aes People & Places; Haskell Cultural
Center and useu and the Buildings. With
each section photographs aps
reproductions of publications and explanatory
text can be accessed. The following
presentation consists of ore than 750
photographs 80 aps and explanatory
text fro the Haskell Cultural Center and
useu the Kansas tate Historical ociety
internet books and other non-copyrighted
aterial.
This work is the first scholarly attept to
cobine inforation and visuals fro a variety
of sources transforing the into a for easily
accessible to researchers students and
especially teachers. One of the priary
purposes of this project is to provide teachers
fro Lawrence Kansas and across the nation
with curricular aterial that can be easily
accessed and integrated into their teaching.

years y life had coe to a roadblock and I no
longer wanted to be at the botto of the
³tote pole´ but wanted to be on the top.
When I graduated fro high school I went
straight to working. I drove new cars and always
had oney in y pocket. When 1998 rolled
around I felt that I could go no further without
an education. When graduating fro high
school all a person needed was that diploa.
Today one has to have a aster¶s degree to
support theselves and their faily. This ade
e want to enroll in college and get a
bachelor¶s degree. Therefore I applied and
enrolled at Haskell Indian ations University in
Lawrence Kansas and began y undergraduate
career.
While at Haskell I et soe of the ost
exceptional people of y life people that I now
call friends. I would like to thank the staff and
faculty at Haskell for aking y coe back and
undergraduate career so eorable. I still
continue to visit the capus and the people.
s a student at Haskell I et Bobbi Rahder
the University rchivist. Bobbi eployed e
and I started y useu career in the
university¶s photograph collection.
In 2000 funds were available to build a new
Cultural Center and useu on the capus.
I followed the building¶s construction fro the start
to finish. fter oving into the new building I
realized I wanted to continue y degree and I
applied to the University of Kansas in the Center of
Indigenous ations tudies in the useu
tudies track. I would like to say thank you to
Bobbi for sparking y interest in useu studies
and teaching e the iportance of a useu
studies career.
I would also like to thank everyone on the
Haskell capus fro the kitchen staff to the
classroos for aking e laugh and sile for
the any hours I was there. ince 1965 when
y father began eployent there I have had
special feelings for Haskell. I feel that I know
the capus intiately and this is why y
project fills y heart with the fondest of
eories of Haskell.
