Achievement Motivation Theory
• Developed by David Meclelland.

• This theory advocates that human behavior in the job is influenced


by three basic needs

1 Need for Achievement

2 Need for Power

3 Need for Afflication needs

Achievement Needs
• This states that managers with strong motives for achievement are
self motivated.

• They follow through course without objection or Escape from


Responsibilities

• They take personnel responsibility

• They are innovative and take moderate and calculated risks

• They take results Both '+ve' or '-ve" as experience


Power Needs
• Power motivation directs people to take central stage and draw attention
to their own effect.

• They look for opportunity to control


1 Other people
2 Budgets and Equipments.

The power needs can be:


• Personalized- manipulating others
• Socialized- Serves good of the organization or society.
Affilication Needs
• Managers with a strong affilication need befriend coworkers, Show loyalty
to the work group and the organization

• They find compatible working relation ships more important than


exercising power and high-level accomplishments
Achievement theory
The theory explains the general behavior types and not complete behavior .
This doesn’t include people who crave for adventure and Thrills. They are
ready to take unwanted risks

This theory just explains three needs of managers with their own ideology
and approach towards success ladder.

The people with any three of the above mentioned needs gain an advantage
over people who just work without these special needs. Helps HR dept
discover people who need to be sent up the ladder .
Self Motivation Theory
• Self motivation is called best motivation among all other forms of
motivation.

• This refers to process of growing self awareness by one self and analyzing
the goals and doing things with passion and burning desire towards
achievement within ones own decision influenced by himself.

• The role of a manager will be that of sowing the seeds of self motivation,
Cultivating the growth and reaping the benefits of the self motivated
employees productivity.

• The manger has to follow following steps to cultivate the self motivation in
an employee.

 Make the tasks very clear to employee.

 Recognize their achievements , Recognizing the task is more important


than who recognizes.

 Personalize the course of performance .Explain the impact of behaviour


on the performance of jobs.

Remove supervisory blocks as blocks might demotivate them.

 Pilot the hrd initiatives sincerely. Be carefull as motivation might be


mistaken to manipulation

 Use punishment techniques cautiously as the punishment should not be


painfull but motivational and these measures have to be administered
before use .
 Support them in all their endeavour.
