INTRODUCTION
Taipei 101 formerly known as the Taipei World Financial Center, is
a landmark skyscraper located in Xinyi District, Taipei, Taiwan. The building ranked
officially as the world's tallest from 2004 until the opening of the BurJ Khalif in Dubai in
2010.

Taipei 101, designed by C.Y. Lee& partners and constructed primarily by Samsung
Engineering & Construction

Taipei 101 comprises 101 floors above ground and 5 floors underground. The building
was architecturally created as a symbol of the evolution of technology and Asian tradition
The tower is designed to withstand typhoons and earthquakes.

A multi-level shopping mall adjoins the tower houses to hundreds of fashionable stores,
restaurants and clubs.
STRUCTURAL DESIGN
The skyscraper Taipei 101 incorporates both environmental and economical benefits through
the choice of its materials. This building is supported by an enormous 37,000 cubic yards
and 16’-5” (5m) thick fly-ash concrete mat foundation supported by 380 4’-11” (1.5m)
diameter concrete piles. These concrete piles are embedded with high-strength concrete
and extend over 98ft (30m) into the bedrock. Above ground level, the building includes
eight blocks of eight floors in the shape of opening flowers.

The Taipei 101 floor plan consists of a square shape with saw-tooth corners, recycled
steel floor framing, a square braced frame central core, and massive outrigger columns
on each face.

Wind tunnel testing at RWDI, Guelph, Ontario, Canada was essential in considering
typhoon conditions. It was concluded after the wind tunnel test that these “saw-toothed
corners,” dramatically reduce vortex shedding that generates wind sway. This, in turn,
reduces the acceleration and inter-story drifts of the building, enhancing its occupants’
comfort and health.
Gravity systems

The tower superstructure is a steel frame with ‘H’ shape steel beams acting
composite with the floor slab through Shear studs, and floor concrete acting
composite with metal deck.

Lateral (wind and seismic) systems

Lateral forces will be resisted through a combination of braced frames in the

core, outriggers from core to Perimeter, ‘super-columns’ and moment resisting
frames in the perimeter and other selected locations.

Design of super-columns

To minimize the member sizes and thickness used, high strength steel plates
with 60 ksi yield strength was Specified for the super-columns, even for steel
plate up to 80 mm (3.15 inches) thick. Ductility in the steel plates And framing
members was ensured by specifying the yield ratio, through-thickness
characteristics and Weld ability.

COLUMN DETAIL
A total of 8 composite super-
columns with the size up to 8’-
0” X 10’-0” were used in the
Taipei
101 tower
The elevation view of Taipei 101 consists of a six story 71ft
(21.5m) deep basement, a 25 story truncated pyramidal
base, and eight 8-story flared modules, topped with an
observation deck along with a spire.

The building contains a braced core, lower multi-story

outriggers, and single-story outriggers at the base of each
module, which all consists of recycled steel.

also displays the moment frames that work with the braced
core to create a “dual system” which is very effective for
seismic resistance.

CHALLENGES FACED
•Is it able to withstand the constant threat of
earthquakes?
• Is it able to withstand the constant threat of
typhoons and high winds?
• How can the building’s sway can be controlled?
SOLUTIONS

3.Ground to highest occupied floor: 439.2 m (1,441 ft). Formerly held by the
Willis Tower 412.4 m (1,353 ft).
4.Fastest ascending elevator speed: designed to be 1010 meters per minute, which is
16.83 m/s (55.22 ft/s) (60.6 km/h, 37.7 mi/h). Now it has been succeeded by Burj

Tallest sundial .
6. could withstand :gale winds of 60 m/s (197 ft/s, 216 km/h, 134 mph) and the strongest
earthquakes likely to occur in a 2,500 year cycle
