(i.e. ports mentioned in the First Schedule)
and to such parts of the navigable rivers and
channels
 It does not apply to vessels in the service of
the Central or State Government or naval

 THE SECOND SCHEDULE is repealed.
Definitions
 “Master", when used in relation to any
vessel 6[or any aircraft making use of any
port], means , subject to the provisions of
any other enactment for the time being in
force, any person (except a pilot or
harbour-master 6[of the port]) having for
the time being the charge or control of the
vessel 6[or the aircraft, as the case may
be]
Definitions
 "pilot" means a person for the time being
authorized by the 2[Government] to pilot
vessels.
 "port" includes also any part of a river or
channel in which this Act is for the time
being in force;
 "port-officer" is synonymous with master-
attendant;

 "ton" means a ton as determined or
determinable by the rules for the time
being in force for regulating the
measurement of the net tonnage of British
ships;
 "vessel" includes anything made for the
conveyance 6[mainly] by water of human
beings or of property;
Definitions
 "major port" means any port which the
Central Government may by notification in
the Official Gazette declare, or may under
any law for the time being in force have
declared, to be a major port;
Duties of a Deputy Conservator
 To ensure that ropes and cables do not
endanger the safety of vessel in the port or near
the entrance of the port.
 To remove any obstructions within the limits of
the port
 To recover expenses of removal
 To prevent damage to buoys and moorings
 To raise or remove wreck affecting navigation
within the port limits
 To request Master and Crew of any vessel to
prevent or extinguish fire
Duties of a Port Health Officer
 To board any vessel and medically examine the
officers and crew
 To examine any documents, papers, log-book
etc for the purpose of enquiring about the health
and physical condition of the persons on board
the vessel
 To call any person for interrogation in the above
connection
 To make any person so interrogated to sign a
declaration of the truth of the statements made
by him earlier.
