Multi Router Traffic Grapher

(MRTG)
The Multi Router Traffic Grapher (MRTG) is a tool to monitor the traffic load on
network links. MRTG generates HTML pages containing PNG images which provide
a LIVE visual representation of this traffic.

MRTG consists of a Perl script which uses SNMP to read the traffic counters of your
routers and a fast C program which logs the traffic data and creates beautiful graphs
representing the traffic on the monitored network connection. These graphs are
embedded into webpages which can be viewed from any modern Web-browser.

In addition to a detailed daily view, MRTG also creates visual representations of the
traffic seen during the last seven days, the last five weeks and the last twelve
months. This is possible because MRTG keeps a log of all the data it has pulled
from the router. This log is automatically consolidated so that it does not grow over
time, but still contains all the relevant data for all the traffic seen over the last two
years. This is all performed in an efficient manner. Therefore you can monitor 200 or
more network links from any halfway decent UNIX box.
Multi Router Traffic Grapher
(MRTG)
MRTG uses the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) to send requests
with two object identifiers (OIDs) to a device. The device, which must be SNMP-
enabled, will have a management information base (MIB) to look up the OIDs
specified. After collecting the information it will send back the raw data
encapsulated in an SNMP protocol. MRTG records this data in a log on the client
along with previously recorded data for the device. The software then creates an
HTML document from the logs, containing a list of graphs detailing traffic for the
selected device.

CiscoWorks
LAN Management Solution
(LMS)

CiscoWorks LAN Management Solution (LMS) is an integrated suite of

management tools that simplify the configuration, administration, monitoring,
and troubleshooting of Cisco networks. Built upon popular Internet-based
standards, CiscoWorks LMS applications help enable network operators to
manage the network through a browser-based interface that can be
accessed anytime from anywhere within the network. CiscoWorks LMS
maintains a centralized list of all Cisco network devices and their credentials
that serves as a single repository for all CiscoWorks applications whether
they are installed locally or distributed in a multiserver deployment.

6. CiscoWorks Common Services

Provides the infrastructure for a common management desktop experience and

the services for securing access to all CiscoWorks applications. Includes a
common device and credentials repository for all applications as it populates
the repository after running discovery over the managed network. Facilities
include a foundation for integrating with other Cisco and third-party applications.

7. CiscoWorks Virtual Network Manager

Provides ability to configure, monitor, and troubleshoot VRFLite

implementations. Configuration capabilities involve hop-by-hop configurations
involving 802.1q trunks. Also has ability to discover VRFs in the network and
provide a readiness report of capable and enabled devices

This design describes the architecture, general configurations and guidelines
for the implementation of following solutions:

• Tivoli Infrastructure, Base Monitoring and Event Management

It ensures that Tivoli can communicate with the managed resources; hardware
and operating system components are monitored and a central server is
defined for event management. The Tivoli infrastructure, the measurement
data and event information produced by this first step is the basis for all further
steps of the solution

•Database and Web Application Monitoring

Databases (Oracle, MS-SQL and DB2) will be managed with pre-configured,
best-practice monitoring solutions. IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases and
Web Applications are installed on top of the infrastructure provided in step 1.

• Business Impact Management
The business impact management is realized using the IBM Tivoli Business
Systems Manager. Once the product is configured it will provide a map of
business systems required for business processes.

• Helpdesk management
Helpdesk functions will be enabled to identify a business impact in case an IT-
component is not working or exceeds defined thresholds.

• Network Management
IBM Tivoli NetView will be responsible for managing all of the components
distributed Network. The network admin will be able to monitor their
networking devices, define network monitors and thresholds with the solution
and receives reports and alerts on the status of the defined monitored
devices.
