Frequently asked questions on Six Sigma
How are GBs / BBs / MBBs certified? Is there a globally accepted standard for certifying them?
Certification for all kind of people is internally determined. The concept of certification was developed to
identify people who were proficient in the usage of Six Sigma. For example, GE certifies its Black Belts on the
basis of a number of projects completed, training completed, mentoring of other Green Belts projects and
finally a written test.
Six Sigma has been traditionally applied in the manufacturing sector. How relevant is Six Sigma to
other industries?
Most of the statistical tools have probability as the basis. The earliest application of probability was not in the
manufacturing industry, but in gambling. Many tools of statistics are applicable to gambling. Having said this,
Six Sigma or the set of statistical tools, can be applied to any process which has a measurement attached to
it. The difference between the manufacturing and service industry is that measurements in manufacturing are
instinctive, services being new, measurements are being developed even as you are reading this. So, as long
as you can measure the output and inputs to a process you can use Six Sigma to improve the output from
that process.

Six Sigma Methodology
Interviews Used to ask open ended questions. Not suitable for mass
customers. Is subject to the interpretation of the interviewer
Surveys Used when there is a huge base of customers. Is used only for
close ended questions.
Focus groups Used when able to find a few expert of the product or process on
which you are trying to gather information on.
Quality Function Used to convert the voice of the customer into a meaningful
Deployment measures within the organization.
SIPOC Used to identify the processes to improve and tie-in the supplier to
the customer. SIPOC stands for Supplier - Input - Process - Output
- Customer.

Zst. DPMO (Defects Per Million Opportunities) is another
term which can be converted into a Zst using a look up

Brainstorming This soft tool is used in a lot of tools to obtain the initial
information. Brainstorming is an informal means of collecting
data. Once the ideas are generated, then they can be
separated for being in context or out of context.

variances of two or more levels of a factor.
Moods Median test Used for identifying significant differences between medians
of two or more levels of a factor. Is used when data is non-
normal.
