 One suite of technologies that has emerged in the commercial
Information Technology (IT) industry sector and is maturing very
rapidly is colloquially referred to as web technologies.

 The family of Web Technologies presents a number of new

opportunities for applications.

 Web Technologies (WT) encompass commercial IT quality software

enabling the creation, viewing and management of multi-media data.

 Due to the user interfaces provided by web browsers across the

platforms serves to reduce operator training cost and minimize
transaction errors.
 Distinction between Web and the Internet.
 CERN sought to build a distributed “hypermedia” system on the
internet.
 Hypermedia - Click on a word or phrase displayed on screen and a
hot link causes it to jump to another document ,page or …
 Before “mosaic” accessing online information was something only
Computer Scientists and Scholars did using text-based terminals.
Approach

 Our approach using web technologies consists of a number of new

considerations that previously were in the domain of specialized
custom applications.

 Highly interactive graphical user interfaces (GUIs) consumed a

dominant part of custom application development.

The notions of network distribution of applications, shared resources,

iterated development ongoing from a truly usable prototype, and a
focus on packaged re-usable objects, all shed new light on how to
develop or enhance applications rapidly, at reduced overall cost, in a
commercially supported setting.
We are primarily interested in the parts that the
components of web technology. There are mainly 4
components which are shown in below,

 HTML
 XML
 HTTP
 Proxy Servers
Text format for publishing hypertexts on the World Wide Web.
Representation rather than presentation .
It provides a means to describe the structure of text-based
information in a document.
HTML can also describe, to some degree, the appearance and
semantics of a document, and can include embedded scripting
language code which can affect the behavior of Web browsers and
other HTML processors.
XML--Extensible Markup Language
XML is a general-purpose specification for creating custom markup
languages.

Extensible
It is classified as an extensible language, because it allows the
user to define the mark-up elements.

Markup
 XML documents are made up of
entities
 No fixed set of markup tags

 XML provides a basic syntax that can

be used to share information between
different kinds of computers, different
applications, and different organizations
without needing to pass through many
layers of conversion.
HTTP-- Hypertext Transfer Protocol

Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is an application-level protocol for

distributed, collaborative, hypermedia information systems.
Messages represented as user-readable ASCII strings

May contain encoded information .

Typically runs on TCP/IP, port 80 as default

HTTP is a request/response standard between a client and a server.

HTTP is not constrained to using TCP/IP and its supporting layers,

although this is its most popular application on the Internet.

HTTP can be "implemented on top of any other protocol on the Internet.

Proxies
An intermediary program which acts as both a client and a server
Caching.
In computer networks, a proxy server is a server (a computer
system or an application program) that acts as a go-between for requests
from clients seeking resources from other servers.
To keep machines behind it anonymous (mainly for security).
To speed up access to a resource (via caching). It is
commonly used to cache web pages from a web server.

Web service consists of the following key
components(web technologies),which provide a flexible
and scalable server environment.
 Apache Web Server
 WebDAV (Web-based Distributed Authoring and
Versioning)
 CGI Support (Common Gateway Interface)
 SSL (Secure Socket Layer)
Conclusion

 This paper provides an overview of main

components of WEB TECHNOLOGY and its key
features.

 Interactive multimedia technology and the

World Wide Web play an increasingly central role
in the field of communication , education, etc
