Objective
To maintain a specified level of moisture in the soil of
the lawn by regulating the flow of water from
sprinkler(s).
To ensure the uniform distribution of water
throughout the field and to minimize the dry regions
of the lawn as far as possible.
Time Frame for the project
The outline design of the proposed initial model
along with the theoretical analysis of its functioning is
ongoing.
Fabrication of a the components are yet to be done
and this might take about 2-3 months.
Considering the testing period and redesign work
which might be warranted, the estimated project
duration is 6 months.
Cost estimation
The total cost of the project is estimated to be around
Rs. 7500.
The cost breakdown is given below.
Name of the Component Estimated cost of the
component
Sprinkler(s) Rs. 500
Moisture sensor( Vegetronix $ 40 = Rs. 2000 (approx.)
VG400)
Electro-hydraulic DCV Rs. 3000
Pipes and wirings Rs. 500
Electronic signal amplifiers, Rs. 500
rectifiers and inverters.
Miscellaneous Rs. 1000
Fabrication of components
The sprinkler needs to be fabricated from scratch for
the specified lawn area.
The length of the nozzle, diameter of the nozzle and
the number of outlets need to be designed.
Protective covering for the DCV and electronic
systems need to be designed and fabricated.
Simulation
The initial proposed functioning of the system is as
follows:
The moisture sensor is buried at a particular depth
within the soil surface to sense the level of moisture
at that point.
Distribution of moisture is considered to be
homogenous throughout the soil at that depth.
The moisture sensor will provide a variable output
voltage depending upon the moisture level of the soil
at the given depth, the output voltage is directly
proportional to the moisture level.
When the output voltage falls below a certain value
corresponding to the critical moisture level, the
coupled electronic system will output a voltage which
will actuate the Electro-hydraulic DCV to release the
flow of water to the sprinkler.
The DCV will be directly connected to a tank kept at
the terrace of the building.
And when the moisture level of the soil at a depth
raises above a specified value owing to the sprinkling
of water over the lawn by the sprinkler, the DCV will
be closed as the signal from the electronic system is
reversed.
Mechatronics involved
The output signal from the moisture sensor has to be
manipulated in such a way that it is able to indirectly
actuate the DCV into either closing or opening the
valve.
Expected Results
The moisture level in the soil of the lawn is
maintained at a near constant level throughout its
area.
The sprinkler(s) is positioned in such a way that
uniform distribution of water is ensured and nearly
no part of the lawn is left dry.
