OBJECTIVE

 The objective of this project is to build a simple

electric motor from scratch.

 To understand the inter relationship of electricity

and magnetism.

OPERATING PRINCIPLE

When a current carrying conductor

is placed in a magnetic field it experiences
a force which tries to rotate the conductor
on its axis

A MOTOR IN 10 MINUTES

A motor is simply a combination of battery, a

magnet and a small coil of wire.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED :

A battery Holder

A battery

A magnet

Some magnet wire

Enamel Coated 22 Gauge thick wire

Length of 100 cms

Some heavier wire

Bare wire of 18 to 20 Gauge wire

Length of 30 cms
STEP 1
FORMATION OF ARMATURE

Take the wire and wind it on a ball point pen or a small AAA
battery to make it in round form.

Leave couple of inches of wire free at the end.

Wind 25 to 30 turns of wire around the cylindrical support.

Now carefully pull the coil off the support.
FORMATION OF ARMATURE COIL
STEP 2
FORMATION OF AXLE

 Wrap the free ends of the wire around the coil a couple of times.
 The binding turns must be exactly opposite to each other.
 The two ends of the coil must be in a straight line so they form a
good axle.
FORMATION OF AXLE
STEP 3
FORMATION OF SUPPORTING PILLARS

Take the copper wire and make it straight.

Remove the top half of the insulation from the wire.

Do the same thing to the other set of copper wire.
STEP 4
FORMATION OF SUPPORTING PILLARS

Make small loops of the wire ends so that it is able
to support the armature.

Do the same to another wire, so you have two
supports.

Attach one end of the support wires to the battery
holder and the other end to hold the armature.
FORMATION OF PILLARS
STEP 5
FINAL PREPARATION

 Insert the battery into the holder.

 Place the permanent field magnet just underneath
the coil on the top of the battery holder.
 Place a small strip of paper between the battery and
the electrical contact in the holder.

This acts as a motor on/off switch.
