Anjara

Anjara is located northwest of Jordan,

in the province of Ajloun.
It is one of the poorest areas, where
the majority of the population work in
agriculture and in the public office.
Since 2003, a religious community
works in Anjara, which in addition of
taking care of the parish and the
sanctuary are also in charge of a parish
school and of the running of groups of
children, youth and adults. Moreover
they also provide assistance to those
families more in need.

The projects which are currently taking place include:
˜ A centre for the rehabilitation of disabled children.
˜ The first youth library in the north of Jordan.
˜ A free foster home (where the children most in need can receive care,
education, clothing, take part in cultural activities, etc)
˜ Scholarships to provide the poorest children with an education
˜ ͞Casa del Peregrino͟
Rehabilitation Centre
Currently due to a combination of external factors such as staff shortages
and insufficient funds the centre only opens one day per week.
To improve this situation and increase the capacity of the centre
specialised personell is required as well as improve infraestructures and
material...
xouth Library
!he opening of the library was a great success. It has provided with an
excellent educational backup to the Christian and Muslim communities of the
area, moreover it is orientated at encouraging the full integration and
understanding of both cultures and religions. However it would be useful if
further didactic material could be added to the currently limited resources
available.
The centre today

As a result of the increasing social and moral difficulties some of the families of the region
were going through the religious community saw itself in the necessity of keeping some
of the children with them and under their care . This project started in 2005, and up to
date 27 girls and 5 boys have lived with the priests and nuns of the centre. As of today
there are 26 girls and 6 boys living with them, nevertheless the community hopes to be
able to take in more children.
The Centre Today
˜ To pay for the maintainance of the home, the centre and the school, the
community only disposes of the salary that three of the nuns receive for
their work in the church and the school (450 dinars in total which are 420
Φ aprox.).
˜ With this sum the community has to pay for the monthly cost of feeding,
educating and maintaining the children (includes medical attention and
coverage when needed)
˜ At this moment there is a new section of the house being built, specially
indicated for the girls which will have a place of their own that is also
adecuated to their necesities. To continue and conclude this project the
community needs economic aid amongst other things to fix the
bathrooms and other facilities.

The Children
The children need to be sponsored.
˜ School fees (including uniform, school material, etc.)
Ô per child.
˜ Œeeding costs
. £,7 per day ʹ Ô£ per month ʹ 6£ per year.

Sharbel, suffered from problems at Some of the girls at the centre:

home, as a result the community Mandi, Mariana, Olivia y Hilary.
took him in.
The School
˜ The school, called ͞Our Lady of Mount School͟
belongs to the Latin =atriarchate, has 220
students, 50% Christian, 50% Muslim.
˜ The Church (belonging to the Latin =atriarchate
of Jerusalem) helps every student
indiscriminately by lowering the school fees as
much as it can. Being a Christian private school is
an obstacle for this as it does not receive any
form of subsidy from the government. The
remainder must be covered by the families of
the children attending the school and this
supposes a great effort as generally their
economics resources are scarce. Therefore many
families would not be able to send their children
to the school if it wasn͛t for the charitable work
of volunteers working there. Nevertheless there
is a growing necessity to provide these children
with scholarships (valued in 500Φ aprox.)
The School
˜ Before attending this school the children attended public schools.
Currently they have the possibility of receiving their education in this
school which provides them with the best educational backup.
˜ As of the school year 2006-2007 the school was able to offer the ninth
grade to its students (year 10)
˜ The upcoming project is to build a secondary education school in which
the students will be able to finish their studies and thereby will be able to
apply to decent employment occupations.
The School
˜ Thanks to various grants the installation of central heating
throughout the school building could be finished in August 2007.
˜There are still, however, many projects still to be done, ranging from
the installation of suitable bathrooms, furniture, equipment, the
establishment of the last three grades, and the appropriate
conditioning of the classrooms amongst other things.

The Bathroom.
The nursery has been renovated, however
many classrooms still await for renovation.
La Casa del =eregrino
˜ ͞La Casa del =eregrino͟ is an accommodation available to whoever needs
it. It was built 40 years ago and has 12 rooms with private bathrooms.
˜ It is originally intended to pilgrims, volunteers, youth groups, children
from other parishes, etc. Many of these groups come to make their camps
in Anjara.
The =layground
The playground is great fun for the children but it does
not count on with the necessary measures of security.
Summer courses

Since the summer of 2009 a group of students from King͛s College Madrid have
travelled to Anjara to colaborate and organise summer courses during 3 weeks
during which they teach english and IT. This is a great challenge in which both
christian and muslim children participate thereby facilitating the integration of
both cultures.
