COACHING

OBJECTIVE:

To help participants to become a better coach.


LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of the session the participant:
 Should understand the concept of coaching
 Should be able to differentiate between coaching,
training, mentoring and counseling.
 Should be able to identify when and where coaching is
required.
 Should understand the skills required for coaching.

ICE BREAKER

Each person writes down four facts about


themselves, one of which is a lie. Each person
takes turns reading their list aloud and the rest
of the team writes down the one they think is the
lie. When all are done reading the lists aloud, the
first person reads their list again and identifies
the lie. The team sees how well they did.
COACHING
 Coaching is an ongoing professional relationship
that helps people produce extraordinary results in
their lives, careers, businesses or organizations.
 Coaching accelerates progress by providing focus
and awareness.
 It concentrates on where you are now and what
you are willing to do to get where you want to be
in the future, recognizing that results are a matter
of your intentions, choices and actions.
BENEFITS OF COACHING
 Improves specific skills or behavior.

COACHING Vs.
COUNSELING
 Coaching addresses workplace performance whereas
counseling deals with attitudinal problems.
 Coaching is used by high achievers as much as beginners
or people who are stuck whereas counseling is sought by
people having difficulties.
 Coaching focuses on the future and developing a workable
solution counseling focus on the past and the origins of
problems.
COACHING Vs. TRAINING
 Coaching is about facilitating someone else’s thinking and
helping them learn by working on live work issues whereas
training is about teaching specific skills or knowledge.
 Coaching takes place in the office and (when carried out by
a manager) can be integrated into day-to-day workplace
conversations whereas training usually takes place off-site
or in dedicated training sessions.
 Coaching is usually a one-to-one process and is tailored to
the individual’s needs whereas training is more typically
carried out in groups.
COACHING Vs. MENTORING
 A Mentor is usually a more senior person who
shares experience and advises a junior person
working in the same field whereas a coach is not
necessarily senior to the person being coached,
and does not give advice or pass on experience;
instead s/he uses questions and feedback to
facilitate the other person’s thinking and practical
learning.
