What is the Internet?

• Internet (capitalized), is generally considered

to be the global TCP/IP, also known as the
internet protocol suite, network.
• Connects the world and shares information
along multiple channels through servers.
• Attached to the global network of networks

What is an internet?

• On the other hand, internet (not capitalized)

refers to any internetwork without reference
to the scope of the connection.
• Two or more networks connected by Internet
technology and protocols but not connected
to the global Internet.
• Network of networks.

CT003-4-0-PT (Perspectives in Technology) Internet Technology

Intranet

• A privatized Internet.
• Network that uses Internet applications but
designed for use by company/organization
personnel.
• Enables a business to benefit from internet
technologies including;
– Centralized maintenance of shared resources
– Consistent interfaces throughout the network

Extranet

• A cross between Internet and intranet

capabilities.
• Web servers that are shared between closely
aligned organizations; suppliers, vendors, etc.
• Up to date information required by externals
to smooth out certain internal processes

Web Technology

• World Wide Web

– A worldwide collection of electronic documents
– Each electronic document is referred to as a web
– Technological breakthrough offering new
emerging capabilities for sharing and
disseminating information
• Web Browsers
– Application that allows web pages to be viewed
– Example; Internet Explorer (IE), Mozilla Firefox,
Safari, Google Chrome, Opera, etc

Web 2.0

• Web 2.0 is a set of economic, social, and

technology trends that collectively form the
basis for the next generation of the Internet
• A more mature, distinctive medium
characterized by user participation, openness,
and network effects.

Web 2.0

• Web 2.0 technologies such as blogs, wikis,

social networking sites, podcasts and RSS
feeds have been dubbed 'social software'
because they are perceived as being especially
connected, allowing users to develop Web
content collaboratively and open to the public

CT003-4-0-PT (Perspectives in Technology) Internet Technology

Web 2.0

• A wiki is a Web page that can be viewed and

modified by anybody with a Web browser and
access to the Internet.
• This means that any visitor to the wiki can
change its content if they desire, while the
potential for mischief exists, wikis can be
surprisingly robust, open-ended, collaborative
group sites.

Web 2.0

• The term web-log, or blog, was coined in 1997

and refers to a simple webpage consisting of
brief paragraphs of opinion, information,
personal diary entries, or links, called posts,
arranged chronologically with the most recent
first, in the style of an online journal.

Web 2.0

• Podcasts are audio recordings, usually in MP3

format, of talks, interviews and lectures,
which can be played either on a desktop
computer or on a wide range of handheld
MP3 devices.
• Originally called audio blogs.

Web 2.0
• The technology of RSS is a family of formats
which allow users to find out about updates to
the content of RSS-enabled websites, blogs or
podcasts without actually having to go and
visit the site.
• Instead, information from the website
(typically, a new story's title and synopsis,
along with the originating website’s name) is
collected within a feed and ‘piped’ to the user
in a process known as syndication.

Domain Name System

• Hierarchical, dot-separated names

• A multi-level delegation
• Categorized by country and by type of
organization
• Requires to be overhauled
(59% of all domains = .com!)

Domain Name System

• Global top-level domains (gTLDs):

– 2 letters: countries
– 3 letters: independent of geography (except edu,
gov, mil)

Mobile Platform

• The internet is widely used as a platform to

becoming mobile.
• Mobile Computing
– Mobile applications using wireless networks and
portable devices
– This would allow users to access, transfer and
share data or information at any time and place

– Mobile phones
– Personal Digital Assistant (PDA)
– PDA phones/Smart phones/Pocket PC
– Handheld PCs
– Tablet PCs
– Laptops

Internet technology issues

• Despite all its promises and glories, the Web-

enabled technologies are not free of
associated risks and controversies.
• In order to clearly understand the potential of
these technologies, one must also assess the
limitations, stipulations, and provisions of
these technologies in modern organizations.

– Slow transmission and methods and large
– Number of access to a site in a given time
• User Ignorance and Perceptions
– Lack of adequate understanding of the Internet
and it usefulness
•  Cyberloafing
– Surfing the Internet, wasting time and accessing
inappropriate materials

Internet technology issues

• Equity
– Inability to access the Web due to the economic
and geographical reasons
• Exposure Points
– Risk associated with accessing firm’s Web sites
remotely
•  Flooding of the Web with content
– Including information that is not helpful to the site
viewers
CT003-4-0-PT (Perspectives in Technology) Internet Technology
Internet technology issues

• Inadequate search facilities on the WWW

– Lack of a high level query language search engines
for locating, filtering, and presenting information
• Maintaining and integrity of data
– Maintaining up-to-date and accurate information
on the site for viewers to use
• Security
– Maintaining secure and safe systems and keeping
unauthorized user access out
CT003-4-0-PT (Perspectives in Technology) Internet Technology
Internet technology issues

• System incompatibilities
– Cross-platform incompatibility that prevent a
broad system integrations and access
• Web Performance Tracking
– Maintaining account of traffic volumes and
utilization of the site and its contents

Internet technology issues

• Among other important issues that can be

listed as issues of the Web-enabled
technologies include, global laws to deal with
net crimes, censorship, and unsolicited access
to website particularly the inappropriate ones.
