Chemically Resistant Fibers
1. Introduction:

These fibers are designed to

resist chemical attack for acceptable
periods during their use at ambient
and elevated temperatures.
They are also flame resistant.
Their primarily property is their
strength and stiffness.
They are demanded in geotextile and
geomembrane sectors due to their
long term durability to less corrosive
environment.
They have strong chemical bonding
within polymeric backbone which
gives them general inertness.
The minimum presence of aliphatic
chain hydrogen atom decreases their
tendency to oxidise.
These fibers are also used in
Protective clothing applications.
Their main feature is their structures.
The ethlene and propylene fibers are
limited to resistance to temperatures
much in excess of 50degree celcius.
Chlorinated Fibers (PVDC)
Chlorinated Fibers (ARH)
The major imporatnt chemically resistant
fibers are PVDC (poly vinylidene chloride)
Their structure contain -C(CL)2.C(Cl)2-
repeatation.
These are high degree chemical resistant
fibers.
The first PVDC fibers was develoed by
DOW chemicalls in 1940s as Saran fiber.
Its melting range is 160-170 degree
celcius.
Its softens over the range 115-160 degree
celcius depending upon conditions.
Some of its fibers have acceptably high
tenacities up to 0.25 N/tex.
They are resistant to salts acids , most
alkalis, aliphatic hydrocarbons, and
alcohols.

Fluorinated Fibers
PTFE, PVF, PVDF, FEP.
They are extremely chemically inrert.
They are very expensive.
They have highest melting point.
They show excellent thermal properties in
shrinkage.
End Uses
They are ideal for use in filter screens and
cloths, column packings, braided
sleevings, gaskets and conveyer beltings.
