With this question I wanted to get an even

spread of different age groups, to get a true
representation of each age group on whether
they read newspapers, in particular local
newspapers. As you can see I gathered 4
questionnaires from each age group par the 10-
16 year olds, this was because majority
wouldn¶t read a newspaper, nor could I find
many around at that present point in time.

In my first real question, I wanted to find if

newspaper consumption was really there. On a
macro scale, newspaper circulation as well as
magazine circulation figures have been
declining, however from my piece of evidence it
does not really suggest that as 18 of the 24 people I
asked actually do buy a newspaper of some type
whether it be a local or national newspaper.

I thought it would be interesting to get an

understanding of what the average newspaper reader
reads in their local newspaper. As you can tell
majority people read about the news, which is
closely followed by House sales and sport. Some
sections of the newspaper people don't read such as
lifestyle, TV listings and classifieds. The least read
section was communities.

I found that 60% of the people that actually read or

are aware of a local newspaper use their online
content. I also found that majority of the older
population didn't use the online content, this may be
due to the fact that they may not have access. In
addition to that i found that the younger population
was more inclined to use the online content even if
they didn¶t actually buy the local newspaper, due to
the accessibility factor.

This was the only questions where all the people that
answered gave the same answer. The reason why i
have 12 people who answered is because I thought it
would only be appropriate to only ask the people
that used the only content. As you can see all 12
people said they would be unwilling to pay for
online content.

While the questionnaire did receive a good return, there was some
limitations to some of the questions I asked. Firstly when I asked ³Is
there something you would like to read about that your local
newspaper doesn¶t provide? If yes please specify.´ This question
ended up being difficult to analyze as because if the interviewee
replied with yes the next part of the question was open ended, making
it harder to group all answers together. While this question provided
me with more qualitative data the difficultly of grouping it as one
meant it would be as necessary.
Also some people would have been left out if they didn't read their
local newspaper or use the website. This meant that total answers for
all questions wouldn't match.
On the other hand however, you can say that the questionnaire was
effective as i was asking it on an individual basis rather than as an
household as the Harrow Times do, this meant that it was more
reliable. Also the equal age grouping did mean that i was able to get a
good representation from all age groups.
