Web Server Industry

A web server can mean two things - a computer on which a web site is
hosted and a program that runs on such a computer.
OBJECTIVE
 To understand the functions and importance of web server

 To ascertain the list of most popular web servers and

information relating to their features, performance etc
 To compare the market share of various web servers

 To get an overview of web server industry

 To understand the reason behind overselling in web hosting

industry
WEB SERVER INDUSTRY
 A web server is a computer program that delivers (serves) content,
such as web pages, using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP),
over the World Wide Web. The term web server can also refer to the
computer or virtual machine running the program.

 In large commercial deployments, a server computer running a web

server can be rack-mounted with other servers to operate a web farm
.

 Common Features
 Virtual hosting to serve many Web sites using one IP address.
 Large file support to be able to serve files whose size is greater than 2 GB
on 32 bit OS.
 Bandwidth throttling to limit the speed of responses in order to not
saturate the network and to be able to serve more clients.
 Server-side scripting to generate dynamic Web pages, but still keeping
Web server and Web site implementations separate from each other.
SOME FAMOUS NAMES HERE
 APACHE

 MICROSOFT

 ORACLE

 NGINX

 GOOGLE

 LIGHTTPD

 NETSCAPE
APACHE WEB SERVER
 The Apache HTTP Server, commonly referred to as Apache , is web server
software notable for playing a key role in the initial growth of the World Wide
Web. In 2009 it became the first web server software to surpass the 100 million
web site milestone.

 Apache was the first viable alternative to the Netscape Communications

Corporation web server (currently known as Oracle iPlanet Web Server), and has
since evolved to rival other Unix-based web servers in terms of functionality and
performance.

 Apache is developed and maintained by an open community of developers under the

auspices of the Apache Software Foundation.

 As of February 2010 Apache served over 54.46% of all websites and over 66%

of the million busiest.

 The design of Apache is to reduce latency and increase throughput, relative to

simply handling more requests, thus ensuring consistent and reliable processing
of requests within reasonable time-frames.
MICROSOFT WINDOWS SERVER
 Internet Information Services (IIS) – formerly called Internet
Information Server – is a web server application and set of feature
extension modules created by Microsoft for use with Microsoft
Windows.
 It is the second most used web server behind Apache HTTP Server.
As of March 2010, it served 24.47% of all websites on
the Internet according to Netcraft.
 The protocols supported in IIS 7.5 include: FTP, FTPS, SMTP, NNTP,
and HTTP/HTTPS.
 IIS 7 is built on a modular architecture. Modules, also called
extensions, can be added or removed individually so that only
modules required for specific functionality have to be installed.
 IIS 7 includes native modules as part of the full installation.
NGINX
 NGNIX (pronounced “engine X”) is a lightweight, high-
performance Web server/reverse proxy and e-mail (IMAP/POP3)
proxy, licensed under a BSD-like license. It runs
on UNIX, GNU/Linux, BSD variants, Mac OS X, Solaris,
and Microsoft Windows.
 Nginx quickly delivers static content with efficient use of system
resources. It can deploy dynamic HTTP content on a network using
FastCGI handlers for scripts, and can serve as a very capable software
load-balancer.
 Nginx uses an asynchronous event-driven approach to handling
requests which provides more predictable performance under load, in
contrast to the Apache HTTP server model that uses a threaded or
process-oriented approach to handling requests.
ORACLE
 Oracle iPlanet Web Server is a web server designed for medium and
large business applications. Oracle iPlanet Web Server builds on the
earlier Sun ONE Web Server, iPlanet Web Server, and Netscape
Enterprise Server products.
 Oracle iPlanet Web Server is available on Solaris, Windows, HP-
UX, AIX, GNU/Linux, supportsJSP and Java
Servlet technologies, PHP, NSAPI, CGI, and ColdFusion.
 In January 2009, Sun open sourced core components of Sun Java
System Web Server 7.0 under the BSD license as Open Web Server.
 In 2010, Oracle renamed the product from Sun Java System Web
Server to Oracle iPlanet Web Server.
GOOGLE
 Google Inc. is a multinational public corporation invested in Internet
search, cloud computing, and advertising technologies. Google hosts
and develops a number of Internet-based services and products, and
generates profit primarily from advertising through
its AdWords program.
 Google runs over one million servers in data centers around the
world, and processes over one billion search requests and
twenty petabytes of user-generated data every day.
 Google's rapid growth since its incorporation has triggered a chain of
products, acquisitions and partnerships beyond the company's
core search engine.
LIGHTTPD
 lighttpd (pronounced "lighty")] is an open-source web
server more optimized for speed-critical environments than
common products while remaining standards-compliant,
secure and flexible.
 It was originally written by Jan Kneschke as a proof-of-
concept of the c10k problem - how to handle 10,000
connections in parallel on one serverbut has gained
worldwide popularity.
NETSCAPE
 Netscape Communications (formerly known as Netscape Communications
Corporation and commonly known as Netscape) is a US computer services
company, best known for its web browser.

 When it was an independent company, its headquarters were in Mountain View,

California. The name Netscape was a trademark of Cisco Systems, that was granted
to the company.

 Netscape stock traded between 1995 and 2003, subsequently as a subsidiary of AOL.

However, it became a holding company following AOL's purchase of Netscape in
1998.

 The Netscape brand is still extensively used by AOL. Some services currently
offered under the Netscape brand, other than the web browser, include a
discount Internet service provider and a popular social news website.

 In December 2007, AOL announced it would no longer be updating the Netscape

browser.
TOP WEB SERVER’S SURVEY
•Since January 2003, Port80 Software has surveyed Web sites of the U.S. Fortune 1000corporations to
determine their choice of Web server software.
•July 2007 marks a new update to Port80's Top 1000 Web Servers Survey -- based on the new 2007 Fortune
1000 list of companies' Web sites. This is the first survey update with the 2007 list, the latest since August
2006.
•Microsoft IIS Serves 55.0% of Fortune 1000 Web Sites. Microsoft IIS 6.0 Gains 9.5% since August 2006.
COMPARISON OF SERVERS
PROBLEM WITH
OVERSELLING
 web hosting company would have to pay for a very high rate,
which is very much higher than the normal rate to get the
additional bandwidth that its clients have used up.
 badly affect the server processing time with the exhaustion of the
server processing power
 overselling of website’ space is practiced, there is a very high risk
of potential server downtime due to over-crowded server space.
 This issue had received significant attention from the socialists
and publics.
 Overselling had been overly done by many web host providers
who had not being furnished with the right type of server for
overselling their web hosting.
