GENERATIONS OF

COMPUTER
Generation of computer
based on characteristics of
various computers
developed from time to
time, they are categorized
as generation of
computers.
The evolution of digital computing is
divided into six generations:-

• First generation (1942 to 1954)

• Second Generation (1954 to 1964)
• Third Generation (1964 to 1972)
• Fourth generation (1972 to 1990)
• Fifth generation (1990 to onward)

 First generation
COMPUTER(1942 to 1954)
First generation of computer started with
using vacuum tubes as the basic
components for memory and circuitry for
CPU(Central Processing Unit).
GENERATIONS OF COMPUTER
 Second Generation (1954 to 1964)
 The main features of Second Generation are:
 Use of transistor
 More Reliable and faster as compared to first generation
computers
 Generate less heat as compared to first generation computers
 Assembly language and high level programming language were
used
 Multiprogramming Operating System used
 Magnetic cores were used as primary memory
 Magnetic tape and magnetic disks were used as secondary
storage devices
GENERATIONS OF COMPUTER

 Third Generation (1964 to 1972)

 The main features of third Generation are:
 Third generation of computers use Integrated
Circuits (IC’s) in place of transistors
 IC was invented by Jack Kilby
 A single IC has many transistors
 Smaller in size
 Generate less heat and consumed less electricity
 More reliable
GENERATIONS OF COMPUTER

 Fourth generation (1972 to 1990)

 The main features of fourth Generation are:
 In fourth generation very large scale integrated
(VLSI) technology used
 VLSI circuits having about 5000 transistors
 Portable and reliable
 Very cheap
 Very small size
 No A.C. needed
 Concept of internet was introduced
GENERATIONS OF COMPUTER

 Fifth generation (1990 to onward)

In the fifth generation the VLSI technology
became Ultra Large Scale Integration (ULSI)
technology
This generation is based on parallel processing
hardware and AI (Artificial Intelligence)
software
GENERATIONS OF COMPUTER

 The main features of fifth Generation are:

 ULSI technology
 Development of true artificial intelligence
 Development of natural language processing
 Availability of very powerful and compact
computers at cheaper rates
 Advancement in superconductor technology
 Advancement in parallel processing
 More user friendly interfaces with multimedia
features
