What Is A Jet Stream???

Relativelystrong winds
concentrated within a narrow
band in the atmosphere.
What Is the African Easterly Jet???

 The African Easterly Jet, also known as

the West African jet, it’s a powerful
air current that generates extreme
winds which is formed from the
interaction of two air masses over the
continental region of West Africa in
the lower regions of the troposphere.
Formation of the African Easterly
Jet(AEJ)
 During the northern Hemisphere summer
solicits, where the temperature of the
Sahara Desert is at its highest in respect to
the humid air over the gulf of guinea.
Where these two air masses merges an
extreme vertical wind shear is generated.
This produces a contrast in temperature
which influence a north to south pressure
gradient and strong easterly winds.
Characteristics of the African Easterly Jet
 Wind speeds exceeds 30km/h(19mph) in January to 40
km/h(25mph) in march, shifting northward.

 In April the wind speed increase to 45 km/h(28mph).

 The forceful wind shear created by the AEJ is important for the
well developed low pressure convective systems being formed.

 The strongest development of the jet is at about 15km above the

earth surface with wind speeds of up to 40m/s in June to
September.
 Unlike the other jets that flows from west to east the AEJ flows
east to west.
Characteristics of the African Easterly
Jet
Seasons Wind Speed Distance from equator

January- March 30km/h(19 mph) - 40 10º-20º above west

km/h(25mph) African

June-September 50/60km/h(31mph) 15ºNorth

October- November AEJ activity decreases 05º North

How African easterly jet interact with other
weather features / phenomena
 The African Easterly Jet(AEJ) is a key element needed for
bringing intensive rainfall during the west African monsoon
system
 Also, a the major component for the formation and motion of
weather systems(low pressure systems) that occurs on the
west African coast.
 As these systems of low pressure produce convective rain
bearing clouds, that precipitate large quantities of rain
which induce flash floods, landslides and storm surges over
the surface area in the Caribbean/North American
region(Region 4).
 These storms created by the jet also acts as a mechanism to
bring warm into the polar regions.
Easterly jet impact on weather with the
region
 Disturbances that occur within the African Easterly Jet may later
on bring development to low pressure systems traveling along the
path of the easterly jet into the warm Atlantic waters such as:
 Tropical cyclones
 Tropical Waves
 Hurricanes

 The high levels of moisture in the atmosphere tends to expand

the convective clouds, whereby using the warm ocean as an
energy source. The upward movement of air encourages
convective activity(updrafts),cold sinking air then rushes to
replace it(downdrafts). If this system continue to develop, it will
become a hurricane with a well defined eye with extreme
spiraling winds.
