STANDARD PRACTICE - CODE 4 REF. NO. 4.3

TOWING PROCEDURE
OBJECTIVE

To provide the recovery procedure to be followed by Artisans, Technicians and Supervisors when
it is necessary to tow any defective machine from underground to the surface workshop for repairs.

1 . ENGINEERING SPECIFICATIONS

i. Only machines approved by the appointed Engineer will be used as towing vehicles.

ii . The braking system of any vehicle which will be used for towing will be checked thoroughly
before it is used.

iii . Inspected 28 mm slings and 28 x 32 mm shackles will be used to connect defective vehicle to
the towing machine.

iv . Prior to any brake adjustments or hose disconnections being made to the defective machine :-

a. Chocks (approved by the Engineer) will be wedged behind all wheels of the defective vehicle.

b. The required slings will be attached to the towing and the defective machine as prescribed by
the appointed Engineer.

c. Slack in the attached slings will be taken up by the operator of the towing machine and the
park brake applied.

d. The operator of the towing machine will remain at the controls in his machine until
attachments and towing is completed.

e. Where defective vehicle has no engine power or hydraulics available - slings must be rigged
with a minimum clearance between the two vehicles.

v. The tension on the required safety sling must be such that slack in the sling would not cause
it to break if the towing slings were to fail.

vi . Towing procedure may only be performed under the direct Supervision of an experienced
Artisan / Technician.

2. SPECIFIC MACHINE PROCEDURES

ARTICULATED DUMP TRUCKS (ADT’s)

i . Two slings must be attached to the front sling eyes only.

ii . Where hydraulics to the brakes are out of order adjust the brakes fully down on all wheels of
the vehicle to be towed.

iii . If required disconnect the hydraulic hoses on the steering cylinders.

LOAD HAUL DUMP UNITS ( L.H.D’s )

i . Where possible attach two slings to the back side of the machine so that the bucket is in the
opposite direction to towing.

ii . If engine and or hydraulic pumps have failed brakes must be released by manual pumping off
of the system with a hand operated hydraulic pump.

iii . The steering cylinder hoses must be removed and blanked.

DRILL RIGS ,ROOFBOLTERS AND UTILITY VEHICLES

i . An approved towing and safety sling must be used.

ii . The prop shafts must be removed.

iii . Brakes must be released by means of a hand pump if engine has failed.

iv . Machines will be towed with turrets lowered facing in the opposite direction to travel.

OTHER VEHICLES (e.g. LDV’s, GRADER, GOPHERS )

i . Two slings to be use (i.e. one towing and one safety sling).

ii . Towing vehicle to be used will be as directed by the Engineering Foreman or Technician in


charge of the shift.

3 . GENERAL

When it is necessary to tow any ADT or LHD out of the workings and LHD will be driven
closely behind the towed vehicle to surface.
