Airplane operation in cold weather conditions


can cause special problems. These problems occur
because of the effects of the ice, snow, slush,
frost, and low temperatures.

Low temperatures (below freezing) can affect


grease viscosity. Lubricate landing gear and flight
control components in warm weather prior to
cold weather ground operations or in a heated
hangar

The procedure that follows is for the removal of


snow from an aircraft that is parked in cold
weather. Do this procedure before you try to
move the aircraft from its parked position.
Methods used for de-icing.

Infrared energy.
Forced air
Combination of Forced air and de-icing fluid.

WARNING: MAKE SURE THE FORCED AIR DEICING


TEMPERATURE IS NOT HIGHER THAN THE MAXIMUM
APPROVED TEMPERATURE FOR DEICING FLUIDS (82°C OR
180°F).

WARNING: MAKE SURE THE FORCED AIR DEICING


PRESSURE EXERTED ON THE AIRCRAFT SURFACES ARE NOT
HIGHER THAN THE MAXIMUM PRESSURE ON THE
AIRCRAFT (10 PSI OR 0.69 BAR) WHICH IS PRODUCED BY A
STANDARD DEICING FLUID APPLICATION (NOZZLE
PRESSURE 100 PSI OR
6.9 BAR).

Deicing/anti−icing is a combination of the two procedures


described above. There are two types of deicing/anti−icing
procedures:
– One−step procedure
– Two−step procedure
The one−step deicing/anti−icing procedure is done with
an anti−icing fluid. The fluid used to deice the aircraft
remains on the aircraft surfaces to give limited anti−icing
capability.
The two−step deicing/anti−icing procedure consists of
the first step (deicing), followed by the second step
(anti−icing), as a separate fluid application.

WARNING: YOU SHOULD NOT OPERATE THE ENGINES DURING THE


DEICING/ANTI−ICING PROCEDURE. ENGINE OPERATION CAN CAUSE THE
AIRCRAFT TO MOVE. THEROTATING PROPELLER AND ENGINE EXHAUST ARE
DANGEROUS. ALSO, DEICING/ANTI−ICING FLUIDS CAN GO INTO THE ENGINE
INTAKES, NACELLE AND FUSELAGE INLETS/OUTLETS, AND THE PITOT/STATIC
PROBES.

CAUTION: YOU MUST NOT LET THE DEICING/ANTI−ICING FLUIDS COLLECT


NEAR THE ENGINE INLET AND THE EXHAUST GAS AREAS. IF YOU DO THIS,
INGESTION OR IGNITION OF THE DEICING/ANTI−ICING FLUID CAN OCCUR
DURING THE START.

It is recommended that you do not operate the engines during the


deicing/anti−icing procedure. If you do operate the engines during the
deicing/anti−icing procedure, make sure that the BLEED air is OFF.

Ensure that aerodynamically quiet areas of the control surfaces are


free from remaining deicing/anti−icing fluid.

If deposits are found, it is to be cleaned with hot water (if conditions


permit) or with diluted SAE Type I fluid.

Harsh Weather Operation
Subtask 70−00−21−869−002
Additional information to protect the engines while
operating in harsh environment.
When the engines are exposed to sand erosion and FOD,
P&WC recommends to:
(1) Restrict CLA movement when aircraft is stationary
(2) Taxi using both engines (both engines out of feather and move PLA equally)
(3) Always use intake blanking covers when the AC is parked overnight
(4) Avoid use of reverse on landing (except for emergency)
(5) Avoid running into sand wakes after landing and prior to takeoff
(6) Move propeller out of feather when engine has stabilized
(7) Operate from paved runway & paved ramp
